Yes, understanding both Sutra and Tantra, and acknowledging that all things whose aspects are not mistaken are established as the ultimate truth by their own characteristics, according to the Mind-Only school. However, the Svatantrika school never stated that these phenomena appearing as internal and external objects are truly established by their own characteristics (90b). This is because these phenomena are only established as conventional, false phenomena. So, the reason why earlier scholars said that is to prevent the Svatantrika school from saying that these phenomena are established in the conventional realm by conventional valid cognition, and thus engaging in refutation and establishment from both sides is reasonable. Moreover, since the Sutra and Tantra schools say that valid cognition and the object of valid cognition are self-validating, the Sutra on Valid Cognition and the Commentary on Valid Cognition will inevitably arise. The great master Bodhicitta-tsondru's extensive refutation of this in works such as the Ornament of Reasoning and Light is also very reasonable. To refute that valid cognition and the object of valid cognition are self-validating, the great master Nagarjuna also thoroughly refuted the sixteen categories of philosophical terms in detail. So, if the Prasangika school extensively speaks of conventional establishments in the conventional realm, even though conventional phenomena are not established by conventional valid cognition, does that mean they say that conventional cause and effect, bondage and liberation, etc., are completely non-existent in the conventional realm? They do not say that. It is because I also speak of it there in the same way that noble beings who seek higher realms and definite goodness make conventional establishments without investigation. So, is it unreasonable to establish conventional cause and effect when conventional cause and effect are not established? It is not contradictory, because even though it is not established, doing it that way and not doing it that way are various ways in which phenomena operate, which are known to be unfailing in the world, and in experience, it seems undeniable in the face of the delusion of language (91a). As it is said, the great elder Buddhapalita said: For the sake of worldly conventions, all is true and not true, true and not true. Likewise, the Bhagavan also said: Whatever is known to exist in the world, I also say exists; whatever is known to not exist in the world,

It is also said that that self does not exist either. Thus it was said. Therefore, when worldly terms are used, what is known as true in the world, the Bhagavan also said is true. What is known as untrue in the world, the Bhagavan also said is untrue. What is known in the world as both true and untrue, the Bhagavan also said is both true and untrue. For example, two villagers went to the city for some business, and entered a temple to look at paintings for fun. One of them said: "The one holding the trident in his hand is the son of Ishvara." "The one holding the wheel in his hand is Mahadeva." The other one said: "You are mistaken. The one holding the trident in his hand is Mahadeva. The one holding the wheel in his hand is the son of Ishvara." As the two were arguing, they went to a wandering ascetic nearby, prostrated and told him their respective thoughts. The ascetic said to one of them: "What you say is true." To the other he said: "What you say is not true." Although the wandering ascetic knew that there was no Mahadeva or son of Ishvara here, and that these were just paintings on the wall, he said, "This is true, this is not true," due to worldly convention, and it would not be a fault of false speech. Similarly, although the Bhagavan sees that all things are empty of inherent existence, he also says, "This is true, this is not true, this is both true and not true," due to worldly convention. In terms of ultimate truth, it is neither true nor untrue. That is what the Buddha taught. How can one say that things that are empty of inherent existence, such as illusions, dreams, mirages, reflections, and echoes, are true and untrue? Therefore, that is the teaching of the Buddhas, the Bhagavans, about the nature of existence and non-existence.

It is free from faults and is uncommon to all non-Buddhists, clarifying the ultimate meaning. Thus it is said. Therefore, my noble father, the great Jetsun Repa, said: In the relative, the cause and effect of the relative, established by the measure of the relative, does not exist, but there it appears as if it exists, that knowing, depending on that, it is permissible to establish a term. However, just by that existence, it is not understood to be truly existent in both truths, if it were understood, then the extreme of existence would become the non-extreme of elaboration. This teaching is the nectar of sustenance for those who desire the state of non-elaboration (92a) and immortality. After careful consideration, I understand it as follows: When the root treatise of the Protector Nagarjuna refutes self-generation, his direct disciples Buddhapālita and Bhāviveka, in the relative, refute with the measure of the relative, such as the nature of the relative, so for both the proponent and opponent, it is not necessary to establish something that is established, but there are those who say it is necessary, and thus they are divided into their respective schools. Later, when the great scholar Chandrakirti refuted the Svātantrika, the scholars Śāntarakṣita and Jñānagarbha, who supported the teacher Bhāviveka, also supported him because they had received the blessing of the view transmitted from the teacher Bhāviveka, and they remained in his establishment. However, because the refutation of the teacher Chandrakirti was directed at Bhāviveka, when the Prāsaṅgikas and the Realists debated, they abandoned the view that both the proponent and opponent must agree on the nature of things established by valid cognition, and explained it as the Prāsaṅgikas said. His way of explaining is that the basis of debate, such as the nature of things, cannot be agreed upon by the Madhyamikas and the Realists, because the Madhyamikas, on one basis, refute reality with the measure of other-knowing, while the Realists cling to reality and establish it with the measure of self-knowing. So, how should the basis of debate, such as the nature of things, be established? Not as the relative of distorted appearance and distorted imputation, but as the ultimate truth that the world acknowledges, (92b) for all Madhyamikas, from scholars to cowherds, to the co-emergent awareness of unexamined minds.
