Because it is free from the four extremes. The Buddha, who knows the ultimate truth, taught that the ultimate truth is emptiness. The Vaibhashika says: What is the cessation that is individually examined? It is separation, individual, individual. It is believed that as many existing things as there are, that many separated things are established. In order to dispel the evil views of those Yogachara practitioners who are manifestly attached to Nirvana, the cessation of truth, as a real thing. The seventh is: Because the three realms arise from conditions, it is definitely declared in the sutras that the three realms are conditioned. Because the three realms arise from causes and conditions, that which is empty of its own nature is said to be conditioned emptiness. The eighth is: That which has birth, abiding, and impermanence, those that do not exist are unconditioned. That which is empty of that is unconditioned emptiness. That which initially arises, abides in the middle, and is ultimately impermanent, these three characteristics of conditioned phenomena, that which does not have them is unconditioned. That which is empty of that unconditioned phenomenon is unconditioned emptiness. This is to dispel the clinging to permanence in unconditioned phenomena such as space. The ninth is: That which has no limit is said to be beyond limits. That which is empty of that is declared to be emptiness beyond limits. That which has no limit of permanence or annihilation, the Middle Way that is free from the two extremes, that is said to be beyond limits. That which is beyond limits, that which is empty of its own nature beyond limits, is declared to be emptiness beyond limits. Some people think that the Middle Way beyond limits is permanent and real, but this treatise also refutes that. The tenth is: The first, the beginning, the last, the end, because those do not exist, samsara is said to be without beginning or end. Because coming and going are separate, like a dream. This existence, with its peaceful nature, that is the emptiness of the beginning and the end. It is definitely declared in the scriptures that there is no emptiness. Samsara is said to be without beginning or end, because the first, the beginning, and the last are the limits, and those do not exist. The meaning of the absence of the three, beginning, middle, and end, should not be taken as the meaning of no beginning and no end in the confused appearance of conventional truth.

Cyclic existence, being devoid of inherent nature, is established as being free from arising, ceasing, and abiding. This existence, like a dream, is devoid of that nature, which is emptiness without beginning or end. It is definitely stated in the Prajñāpāramitā teachings, which possess the qualities of taming and protecting. It is free from the three—beginning, end, and middle—because it does not come here from before, nor does it go from here to elsewhere. Eleventh: 'To abandon' is definitely expressed as scattering and losing. 'Without abandonment' means there is no abandonment; there is nothing whatsoever that is not abandoned. That which is without abandonment is emptiness itself. Therefore, that which is without abandonment is called emptiness. 'To abandon' is definitely expressed as scattering and losing. 'Without abandonment' means there is no abandonment in name; it is not something to be abandoned, and there is no loss of anything whatsoever; it is the virtue of the two accumulations to be attained. That which is without abandonment, that very emptiness which is without abandonment, is, therefore, called emptiness. Twelfth: The very nature of the conditioned, etc., is such that śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas do not create it. Therefore, the very nature of the conditioned, etc., is declared to be self-nature. That very emptiness is self-nature emptiness. The very nature of conditioned, unconditioned, and other dharmas is such that śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas do not create it with their knowledge and vision. Whether they come or do not come (344a), the self-nature of all dharmas is emptiness, empty from the very beginning. Because it is not created, the emptiness of the self-nature of the conditioned, etc., is declared to be self-nature, that is, the name of self-nature is falsely imputed to that which is without self-nature. If so, in the language of the Madhyamaka scriptures, the heat, etc., which is the self-nature of fire, should also be said to be self-nature, since it is not created by the noble ones, etc.? If one does not investigate, it is not prevented from saying so. However, although heat, etc., is not created by the noble ones, it should not be self-nature according to the reasoning of what is known by others, since self-nature must be uncreated and independent. Therefore, heat, etc., is unreasonable.
