and the wisdom of indivisible moments is affirmed as true. The Mind-Only school, specifically the followers of reason, believe that the basis of emptiness, the present moment of awareness, along with the appearance of objects, is empty of all self of persons and phenomena posited by non-Buddhists and Hearers; and they believe that the other-powered and non-dual self-awareness, self-illumination, and perfectly established reality are not empty of this emptiness. The followers of scripture believe that the basis of emptiness, the dharma-nature of mere clear awareness, is empty of all self posited by non-Buddhists and Hearers, and all the stains of appearance posited by the followers of reason; and they believe that the dharma-nature, the other-powered nature of mere consciousness, is established as real, and the perfectly established reality of the non-dual suchness is non-different from the nature of consciousness and exists in reality. Tsongkhapa believes that things established by conventional valid cognition are empty of things to be refuted by reason, and that emptiness is established on that basis. Therefore, the emptiness spoken of by the proponents of things is that the established dharmas are empty of their own nature, but all the bases of emptiness are affirmed as true; and their emptiness exists in such a way that it is either the same as the dharma-nature or inexpressible as other than it, so neither the dharma-nature nor the dharma itself is empty of its own nature, but is empty of other things to be refuted, so it is a temporary, nominal emptiness like the emptiness spoken of by non-Buddhists, and not a true emptiness that can serve as the basis of the path to liberation, because if the dharma-nature and the dharma itself truly exist, then the mind that grasps them as real cannot be abandoned, and if it is not abandoned, then the seeds of afflictive and cognitive obscurations cannot be abandoned. The Svātantrika-Madhyamaka school believes that when examined with the wisdom that discriminates ultimate truth, nothing whatsoever can be found of the basis of emptiness, the dharma of emptiness, emptiness and non-emptiness, dharma and dharma-nature, etc., so all dharmas are peaceful with all elaboration and characteristics, but the appearance of objects and mind, which cannot be refuted by the wisdom that discriminates conventional truth, is the nature of illusion, and in conventional truth it is the basis of emptiness, while in ultimate truth it is believed to be empty of all dharmas posited by those who claim that inner and outer things are real.

(28) Compared to the emptiness of those who assert entities, all phenomena are empty of their own nature, and in the realm of correct hearing, thinking, and meditation, or in the realm of the samadhi of the Mahayana noble ones, it is most excellent and surpassing because it desires the pacification of all elaborations and signs. It can serve as the basis for the path to liberation, and it can also act as an antidote to obscurations. However, even for this, if the appearance of the object-mind appears nominally in the samadhi of the Mahayana noble ones, then is that appearance able to withstand rational analysis? Or does it become ultimate truth? Or does the samadhi also become confused? If it does not appear, then the phenomena are not emptiness nominally, because the samadhi makes them emptiness, so the samadhi nominally becomes a slander against the phenomena, and there is such a fault. In that case, if the definitive scriptures of emptiness, as well as the wisdom of correct hearing, thinking, and meditation, and the wisdom of the Buddhas, become the cause of the destruction of entities nominally, then that is unreasonable and also contradicts the commitment. According to the view of the Prasangika Madhyamaka, the emptiness of all phenomena is not like the emptiness fabricated by conceptual thought, such as meditating on emptiness with the mind when phenomena are actually not empty. It is also not like repairing a vase with a hammer, not empty when not examined, but becoming empty when examined with reason. Similarly, it is not like not being empty when the wisdom of the noble ones has not arisen, but becoming empty when it has arisen. It is also not like the extinction of a lamp, where something that existed before disappears later. (328) It is also not like a vase being empty of water, where the object to be negated is emptied by something else. It is also not like a rabbit's horn, which is completely non-existent. Because these are not empty of their own nature, but are emptiness analyzed by the mind, emptiness of annihilation, and temporary emptiness, they cannot serve as the basis for the path to liberation, nor can they act as an antidote to the two obscurations. So what is it? All these phenomena from form to omniscience, from the beginning, do not establish any of the four extremes of existence and non-existence, the eight extremes of arising and ceasing, the fourteen extremes of permanence and impermanence, and any of the extremes of elaboration such as emptiness and non-emptiness, truth and falsehood. This is called emptiness, suchness, thusness, and so on, merely nominally.
