Because of causes and conditions, from the fruit within its own nature, the eye arises, and because of emptiness, it is without self-nature. That which exists slightly and then changes, is also a transformation and destruction, because it is not impermanent. In the essential meaning of not abiding permanently, in the Twenty Thousand Lines of Light Sutra, it says: 'Among them, a koti is a collection, that is, it exists within them, because the nature of existence is not perceived, akotisastha, that is, there is no abiding in the collection.' Having become like that, how can it become destroyed? Therefore, it is without destruction, that is, the dharma-nature of no arising and no cessation is its own nature. Thus it is said. Its meaning is that, conventionally, emptiness is the nature of all dharmas, and the nature of all dharmas is emptiness, which is reasonable, because all dharmas have not newly created their own nature with all dharmas, and ultimately will not become other, and because at all times, there is no confusion about that abiding principle. Therefore, it is said: It is not reasonable for self-nature to arise from causes and conditions. That which arises from causes and conditions, self-nature will become fabricated. Self-nature is called fabricated, how can it be reasonable? Self-nature is uncreated, and is not dependent on others. Thus it is said. (320b) Thus, in the treatise of the teacher, it says: Is the characteristic uncreated and non-dependent, do you acknowledge that self-nature is a distinguished characteristic? For the eyes and so on, not only in the ultimate truth, but even in the conventional truth, looking at self-nature in a reversed way, thinking that the eye itself is not empty by its own nature, generating the consciousness of self-grasping, for those who speak of the self-evidence of things as being true, for them, in order to reverse the reversed self-nature, the emptiness of the eye itself, is its own nature that is not reversed, which is famous in the interdependent world of conventional truth, abiding in the world itself, and the conventional truth is clarified by the Bhagavan. If one does not analyze in this way, and makes statements about bondage and liberation, etc., when establishing the nature of the two truths on which they depend, in accordance with mere reputation, one speaks of a special self-nature in imitation. In the conventional truth, for the truth that is originally without self-nature, one imputes it as the ultimate truth, so that the very absence of self-nature is the non-reversed nature of both truths, and the self-nature that is established by self-nature is also self-nature in both truths.

It is not reasonable." Thus it is said, but if this statement is carefully analyzed, it cannot be established. However, without such analysis, based on the worldly reputation of those who speak of dependent origination, the analysis that establishes the non-inherently existent nature as inherent is flawed. If it is said that the assertion of worldly people who do not speak of dependent origination, who establish inherent existence as inherent existence, is unreasonable, then it is because, after analysis, it is said not to contradict the conventional world of dependent origination. If it is established in this way, then the two truths of dependent origination and the worldly terms of samsara and nirvana (321a) will not become extinct in the unanalyzed state. Therefore, when Madhyamikas say that all phenomena are emptiness, it is not necessary to be surprised and disgusted, saying that all things are said to be completely non-existent. Therefore, it is from the perspective of the emptiness of the nature of all phenomena that the Blessed One extensively said, "Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the Dharma-nature of phenomena is always abiding." Therefore, what is called Dharma-nature exists. Dharma-nature is the nature of these eyes and so on. That nature is uncreated, not dependent on others, and the self-nature that can be realized by wisdom free from ignorance, which is the ultimate truth. If you ask, "How does it exist?" is it asked from the perspective of analysis or the vision of the noble ones, or is it asked without analysis to the worldly people who speak of conventional dependent origination? If it is like the former, then how can one answer from the state beyond words and thoughts? If it is like the latter, who said it does not exist? No one said it! If it is said that it does not exist, why should Bodhisattvas not practice the path of the Paramitas? Because the Dharma-nature, the self-nature of phenomena, emptiness, does not exist. If it is not so, but the Dharma-nature, emptiness, of all phenomena exists, then in order to realize it, Bodhisattvas engage in hundreds of thousands of hardships. Therefore, the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra says, "Son of good family, the ultimate truth is unborn, unceasing, indestructible, uncoming, ungoing, not to be expressed by letters, (321b) not to be fully explained by letters, and not to be realized by elaboration. Son of good family, the ultimate truth is inexpressible and supremely peaceful."
