Since the basis for concepts such as dependence and non-dependence on phenomena that depend on imputation, as well as concepts of permanence and impermanence, are easily refuted. The so-called "self," which depends on imputation, is not inherently existent, and therefore not substantially existent, and is not a dependence that arises in previous past lives. As stated in the scriptures: 'To say it arose in the past is not reasonable. What arose in previous lives is not the same as this. If you think that is the self, then the objects of grasping become different. Apart from the objects of grasping, what is your self?' So it is said. It is also not non-dependence arising from what has not previously arisen, as stated in the scriptures: 'It does not arise from what has not arisen, for this would lead to faults. The self would become something made, or arising without a cause.' So it is said. This self is neither birth nor destruction, for the aggregates are not the self. They are arising and ceasing. How can the aggregates become the grasper? So it is said. In this, the four extremes of permanence and impermanence do not exist, for where are permanence and impermanence in peace? Where are the extremes of beginning and end in peace? Whoever clings to the idea that the Tathagata exists, clinging tightly to what is grasped, imagines that there is nothing in nirvana. In emptiness by nature, it is not reasonable to think whether the Buddha exists or does not exist after nirvana. So it is said. This self is neither the same as the skandhas nor different from them, for if the skandhas were the self, they would be subject to birth and destruction. If it were different from the skandhas, it would be without the characteristics of the skandhas. So it is said. The meanings of words, such as stability and instability, arise only if the substantial basis of the characteristics exists, and they do not arise without it, therefore the self is not substantially existent. As stated in the sutra: 'There are four inexhaustible dharmas taught by the protector of the world: sentient beings, space, bodhicitta, and the Buddha's teachings. If these were substantially existent, they would be completely exhausted. Because they are non-existent, they are inexhaustible, therefore they are said to be inexhaustible.' So it is said. (306a) Third, the self and what belongs to the self are unreasonable.

It is merely established by concept without examination. There are two ways to be liberated by realizing that these two do not exist. The first is: Because sentient beings always have the thought of grasping at self, and on that object of grasping at self, the self in which the thought of "this is mine" arises is unexamined, in accordance with worldly conventions, and arises from ignorance. Even if sought with the sevenfold analysis, it cannot be found, but due to the power of ignorance of selflessness, what is that self that causes samsara? Outsiders cling to something other than the aggregates, while our own school clings to the aggregates themselves, or clings to something inexpressible that is neither the aggregates themselves nor different from the aggregates. How did the Bhagavan teach? Those who understand say that it is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates, without inherent existence, and that the term "self" is merely applied to that concept. Because, such a self, at any time, for sentient beings such as humans and animals who possess ignorance, the thought of grasping at self arises very strongly, and the object of that clinging is the self. The object of that self's control or the basis of establishment, whether it is internal such as the eye, or external such as the objects of enjoyment, will give rise to the thought of "this is mine," that self is unexamined, in accordance with worldly conventions, and arises from ignorance, that is to say, it is not established by its own nature. The second is: Because without an agent there is no action, therefore, my "mine" cannot exist. Therefore, by viewing the self and the "mine" as empty, the yogi will be liberated. Even though there is no self, names are applied there, therefore, the yogi does not apprehend, and the clinging aggregates such as the eye will not arise. The yogi does not apprehend anything, therefore he will be liberated from samsara. As it says in the scriptures: When the thought of self and "mine" ceases in internal and external phenomena, then clinging ceases, and when that ceases, birth also ceases. And as it says in the Ratnavali: The aggregates arise from grasping at self, grasping at self is actually false, since its seed is false, how can what is born from it be true? Having seen that the aggregates are not true in this way, one will abandon grasping at self, having abandoned grasping at self, later the aggregates will not arise. That is how it is. If there is no self, then does "mine" also not exist? Because just as there is no pot without a potter, there is no action without an agent, because the object to which the agent's action applies is action.
