Because everything is established as the continuum, basis, and practitioner. The pride of the generation and completion stages is also placed on this, because when entering the yoga of the generation and completion stages, all impure and deluded dharmas do not exist even in worldly terms, so emptiness is practiced. Even in mere terms, other than emptiness and dependent arising, it is purified by delusion, and the stainless Sugatagarbha wisdom vajra is the very one on which pride is placed as "I" and "mine." As it is said: The speaker is I, and the Dharma is also I. The listener who possesses his own assembly is I. The world and the transcendent world are I. The world teacher and the object to be attained are I. And: From me, the three places also arise. I pervade all of this. I do not see another nature of beings. Always possessing the nature of bliss. And (301a): Without beginning, without elaboration, the self. The self of suchness, the pure self. And: Sentient beings are themselves Buddhas. Because the Sugatagarbha that all sentient beings possess is given the name of the Buddha and the noble one, this is established from the aspect of the individual. Considering this meaning, in the Kalachakra, the designation "great sentient being" is also made. Starting from this individual, and the all-pervading first protector Vajradhara, etc., as the Heruka of the cause time, Vajrasattva, and the first Buddha, etc., the defiled Suchness, as the sentient being of the base and path time, and the yogis of the noble ones, are also well established by those who possess the vast eye of Dharma, and are established without being refuted by arguments that conform to the Dharma. This meaning is implicitly indicated in the supreme Madhyamaka tenets that explain the definitive meaning of the sutras, in the manner of hidden meaning. In the presence of the noble Maitreya and Nagarjuna, it is said: Impure, impure, pure, and extremely pure, are spoken of in order as sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas. And: When covered by the net of afflictions, it is called a sentient being. When it is free from afflictions, it is called a Buddha. Etc., the meaning that appears from the endless sutras, tantras, and treatises is extensively explained in my "One Meaning," etc., understand it there.

Regarding the Tathāgatagarbha spoken of from the ground, this bindu with the three characteristics of purity, indestructibility, and excellence is given such a designation. Not only has it not been examined, but even when examined, it is considered "I." If examined very carefully, according to the view of the great master Candrakīrti, who is free from extremes, "I" cannot be established as truly existent either. Thus it is said. There is no contradiction in giving designations such as purity to this essence, but if, after examination, it is considered to be "I," and it is established as being there, etc., this is a tampering with the great essential points of the sacred Dharma that brings about liberation and omniscience. Because the pure Tathāgatagarbha is itself a reflexive entity, and it is also considered to be the agent of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa—a person. This is because, after examination, "I" is to be established as truly existent. Since it is too examinable, it is said in an extremely inferior way, as if negating with the guise of words of self of person and self of phenomena, and then establishing it to satisfy one's own desires. If examined very carefully, the fact that "I" cannot be established as truly existent, like the Madhyamaka school according to Candrakīrti's view, is like giving the nectar of life after the vital point has been cut off with a weapon. Who would trust that? We, even when establishing the innately born Tathāgatagarbha without examining it as a person, believe that in both truths, that essence is not established as a person or "I." You, however, say that that essence is established as "I" in conventional truth, and therefore you will become those who have a view of self. When the noble beings of the Vajrayāna enter the conventional truth of the world without examination (302a), the fact that they apply the designations of person and "I" to the essence is because they have not understood the unique aspects of the conventional truth of the world of cause, path, and result, which is known by the Vajrayāna, so they do not make such designations. Therefore, applying the name of "I" to the essence is not the domain of ordinary people whose minds have not been transformed by tenets, or of non-Buddhists, or even of those who speak of the conventional truth of the world who abide in the world from the Pāramitāyāna of the inner Buddhist path onwards. At that time, in the object of one grasping of the view of self, there is both the view of self that arises in dependence on the aggregates and the view of self that arises in dependence on the Tathāgatagarbha, but the continuum of the seer does not become two persons, because in the object of the view of the perishable collection, all five aggregates
