Those who assert the existence of a substantial person (pudgala). They consider it to be the object of knowledge for the six consciousnesses, and they also consider it to be the basis of self-grasping. The Sthavira school says: The person should not be considered different from the aggregates, because apart from the aggregates, there is no basis for worldly people to establish a person. Nor is it the nature of the aggregates, because it would entail arising and ceasing. Therefore, the self cannot be said to be either the same as or different from the aggregates (295n). Similarly, it cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent, because it would become either permanent or annihilated. Thus, they assert that the person exists as a substance, because it is referred to as the agent and the enjoyer, and because it is related to samsara, nirvana, bondage, and liberation. That person is not an object of knowledge by its own nature, but it is known through making the six sense bases, such as form, the object of the mind. Therefore, they consider that person to be the object of knowledge for the six consciousnesses, and they also consider it to be the basis or object of worldly self-grasping. The second part has three points: refuting the self as substantially established, showing it as nominally existent, and showing that it is not established because it lacks the qualities of a real entity. The first point is: Because the mind cannot be understood as inexpressible from form, what is substantially existent is not itself an understanding of inexpressibility. If some self were established as a real entity, it would not become an inexpressible entity like the mind. If it were established as a substance, it should not be inexpressible, because just as the mind cannot be understood as inexpressibly the same as or different from form, whatever exists as a real entity is not itself an understanding of inexpressibly the same as or different from it, because if it were established as a substance, it would not transcend either of these two. If some self were to become established as a substantial entity, it would be pervaded by being an entity established like mind and form, and therefore it would not become inexpressibly the same as or different from them. The second point is: Because your pot is not established as a real entity, its essence becomes inexpressible from form, etc. Whatever self becomes inexpressible from the aggregates, it should not be understood as being established by its own nature. If it cannot be said to be the same as or different from, then it is nominally existent, because your pot is not established as a real entity, but is merely nominally existent. For that reason, the essence of the pot becomes inexpressibly the same as or different from form, etc. Similarly, whatever self becomes the same as or different from the aggregates

Inexpressibly (295b) it transforms. In order to realize that I, in the manner of self-nature, am not established as truly existent, but rather as nominally existent. The third is: Your consciousness is not different from the self, not desiring other objects apart from form, etc., on objects, those two aspects can be seen, therefore, it is selfless, because it is separate from the nature of things. Your self, truly existent consciousness, is not considered other than its own self-nature, just as one desires other objects apart from form, etc., I am not other than myself, nor am I different from others. Therefore, I am not truly existent, because I am separate from the nature of things, because on truly existent objects, one can see the aspects of this and that, like a pot, etc. It is also not reasonable to be an object of knowledge for the six consciousnesses, because eye consciousness relies on form and apprehends a person, becoming the object of knowledge for the eye, if one cannot say form and non-form, then like milk and water, etc., it will become nominally existent, because it is the object of eye consciousness, it will also become different from sound, and that is the same for others, and it also contradicts the statement that the objects of the five senses are different, because a person is the common object of knowledge for the five sense consciousnesses. The Blessed One said that all phenomena that should be manifestly known and completely known are included in the eighteen realms, the six contacts, and the feelings arising from contact, which contradicts the above statement. If a person is not any of the twelve sources, then they will become non-existent, and if they are the twelve sources, then it will also contradict being inexpressible. The third is: Therefore, the basis of self-grasping is not a thing, not different from the aggregates, not the nature of the aggregates, not the basis of the aggregates, this is not possessing them. When examining, the reason why a person is not truly existent is that the basis or object of self-grasping, when examined (296n) is not a thing without this and that, it is not truly existent, it is also not different from the aggregates, nor is it the nature of the aggregates, and the aggregates, etc., are also not the basis, this self is also not possessing those aggregates. The third, there is a brief statement, a detailed explanation through the door of examples, thereby showing that all other schools of thought are also merely nominal, in three parts. The first is: This is because the aggregates are established by relying on it, the reasoning.
