Therefore, for sentient beings, the self, and the distinctions between "I" and "mine," all are grasped as the self. Thus, in both Vasubandhu's *Abhidharmakośa* and its commentary, and in Candrakīrti's *Madhyamakāvatāra* and its commentary, even in conventional truth, the self that is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates is said to be merely imputed, denying its substantial existence. There is no difference between them. There is not even the slightest contradiction in taking the innate grasping of such a substantially existent self as the object to be refuted by reasoning. Apart from that, how could it be said that the view of "I" and "mine" that takes as its object a self and a person established from their own side is grasping at a self? Even so, the Vaibhāṣikas assert that the conventionally existent self exists upon analysis, and they consider it to exist as the nature of a conventionally existent thing. However, the Prāsaṅgikas do not assert that it exists upon analysis, and in the unanalyzed conventional truth, they do not accept that it exists as the nature of such a conventionally existent thing. The Vaibhāṣikas assert that the selflessness of the person (277a) that is empty of the person's self is a substantially existent object of knowledge of the truth of suffering. However, the Prāsaṅgikas say that such selflessness and emptiness are devoid of all characteristics such as knowable and unknowable, existent and nonexistent, substance and imputation, etc. In short, the Prāsaṅgikas explain that the meaning of the unanalyzed, dependently designated self being without inherent existence in both truths is that such a self is empty of its own essence, rather than, as the Gelugpas do, establishing emptiness or non-emptiness of inherent existence based on whether or not something is established from its own side in the way it abides. Because, to assert that all phenomena arise and are established from their own side with their own essence is merely to assert self-nature as the cause, as the Tirthikas do. Apart from that, grasping at such a truly existent thing, whether it is imputed by the tenets of one's own or another's school, or by the innate mind of the world, does not exist. Therefore, apart from the Tirthikas who assert self-nature as the cause, all sentient beings would effortlessly attain liberation. In short, Shar Tsongkhapa Chenpo said that when the Prāsaṅgikas speak of the selflessness of the person, saying that the self grasped by innate grasping is not the object to be refuted as the basis of actions and their results, it is because if such a self existed, then the wisdom that realizes selflessness would not

and it will become wrong, and the clinging to innate self-grasping will not be confused about the meaning, and it will also contradict what one says that all phenomena are without self (277b). Moreover, what the Buddha said that all phenomena are without self, that will become a lie, because we who pride ourselves on being able to distinguish between what to take and what to reject, even if we do not examine the object of innate self-grasping, the self, it exists as the basis of karma and its results just like clinging, and even if we examine it, it is not the self that is refuted by the scriptures and reasoning of the three vehicles, and if it is not, then why should it be considered something to be abandoned? In the ocean of all the scriptures of the three vehicles, not a single word has been said about the characteristics of the object to be refuted, which is the proof other than the self. Saying it like that, all the holy beings have not even heard of it. The pervasion of the proof has been established by valid cognition. There is no way to not admit it. In that case, such a self also exists in the Buddha's continuum, and because there is no other antidote, the Buddha will become one who has self-view and view of the perishable aggregate. If you also admit that, then the perfect Buddha will become not liberated from samsara, because he has the view of the perishable aggregate. Who would believe that such a consequentialist Madhyamika who speaks like this is a Madhyamika? If he is not trustworthy, then the fourfold distinctions of yes and no regarding the view of the perishable aggregate and the view of the self of a person are the verbal differences of the scriptures of the three vehicles of the past, and the limits of establishment are inexhaustible and immeasurable. Because it will never appear, who would be surprised by those self-made things? If you are surprised, then you should also calculate the fourfold distinctions of yes and no for tsampa and dumplings (278a), and that will also become a unique tenet of the consequentialists, because you have to say that barley tsampa is tsampa, but not wheat dumplings, and so on. After saying that, what will happen? If you engage in explaining, debating, writing, and studying, contemplating, and meditating on the treatises of the Buddha and the great Bodhisattvas, and thereby ascertain them, but are busy with empty talk that will not become a cause of liberation, will that not become the work of a demon? The meaning of the new establishment of those fourfold distinctions that you desire is also extremely mistaken, my cow, eyes, ears, etc.
