If one clings to that, then liberation and the path to omniscience will not necessarily arise through the Middle Way, which abandons both extremes. However, since the root of samsara is the innate clinging to self, it is thought that the reasoning for refuting the object of that self should not be stated in the treatises, but only the reasoning for refuting the imputed self. This is not the case, because the object of the innate self, such as persons and sentient beings, is not what is to be refuted when nominal existence is accepted without investigation (274b), and it cannot be refuted, nor is there any need to refute it, so it is not refuted. But when refuting after investigation, it does not go beyond the three ways of reasoning, so the reasoning for refuting the three imputed selves is also the reasoning for refuting the innate self. Because it refutes all the objects of the twenty peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable. Therefore, the innate self is not not refuted in the treatises. As for the self of phenomena: clinging to all phenomena from form to omniscience as their own nature mostly exists only on the level of nominal delusion. In particular, among the things that are clung to, most of what is known or can be known in the world, which the Tathagata speaks of in the scriptures only nominally for the sake of those to be tamed, also exists on the level of nominal delusion. And what is not known in the world and not spoken of by the Tathagata, but is posited by the conceptual thoughts of the external and internal heretics, such as the six and nine meanings of knowable words and the twenty-four natures, as well as indivisible particles, the external object of the Nyaya school, the other-powered truth that is non-dual, the alaya-consciousness, the Tathagatagarbha adorned with marks and signs, the uncompounded permanence, the imputed self, the nominal valid cognition, and the establishment of truth as true in the ultimate truth that is without truth, etc., do not even exist nominally. Then, are not the alaya-consciousness, etc., spoken of by the Buddha? If the Teacher speaks without investigation, then there are two types of speech in nominal existence, provisional and definitive. Such speech, even in nominal existence (275a), is provisional and intentional speech, so the self-school thinks that the Teacher speaks in nominal existence, so he speaks in this way. But such speech is not definitive in nominal existence. All that the Teacher speaks after investigation is only definitive in both truths.

It is not the meaning of uprightness. In short, the essence of all phenomena from form to omniscience, and especially the emptiness of inherent existence in both truths of all superimpositions, is the excellent lifeblood of these Madhyamaka doctrines. What is the point of such a well-spoken explanation? The great Tsongkhapa of the East said: Although the scriptures of the Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Chittamatra, and Svatantrika Madhyamaka extensively explain the reasoning for refuting the self of a person, these systems cannot refute the self of a person, because in these systems, the designation of the object to be refuted by the uncommon sign called the self of a person does not occur, and because without recognizing that self, it cannot be refuted. So, recognizing that kind of self by way of negating the extreme of existence and refuting the self of a person occurs only in the Prasangika's treatises, so without relying on that system, the view of self of a person cannot be reversed. Similarly, although the Chittamatra treatises extensively refute atoms, external objects, and external forms, etc., that system cannot refute the inherent existence of those phenomena, for the same reason just stated. (275b) The grasping of reality of those phenomena cannot be refuted without relying on the Prasangika system. And those who say that there are four alternatives, etc., for the view of the perishable collection and the grasping of the self of a person, etc., do not have a place to go to the Prasangika's tenets. It has been made very clear that we short-sighted people say that this innate grasping of self in our minds is not the object to be refuted by a sign, and that it is not contradictory to investigate as the basis of karma and its effects, and that it exists as a valid convention. The great teacher has made it the object to be refuted by a sign and has refuted it, because it has already been extensively explained above. Moreover, if the Buddha's words and the reasoning of the meaning of the words in the lower vehicles and tenets cannot establish the selflessness of persons and phenomena, then the opposite of that, the true self, cannot be prevented. Then, the Buddha, in accordance with the disciples to be tamed, taught the selflessness of persons and phenomena in the lower vehicles and tenets, so the opposite of that, the true self, would also become meaningless to be reversed. Such a teaching, then,
