It is only examined by individuals who are particularly attached to sectarian views and who possess the habitual tendencies associated with them. Since such sectarian terminology is unknown to ordinary people, it is not a term that is universally accepted, nor does it exist as a conventional truth. However, it is true that ordinary people do not grasp a self as being separate from the aggregates, so the self that is posited by non-Buddhists does not exist even in name. But the basis for the imputation of a self that is revered by many does exist in name, because sentient beings grasp at the aggregates as a self. So, one might ask, does the self of the Vatsiputriyas also exist in name, since ordinary people do not investigate whether the self is the same as or different from the aggregates, whether it is permanent or impermanent, and so on? The answer is no. For they accept the aggregates as the basis of self-grasping after having investigated with reasoning, and they accept that it cannot be said to be either the same as or different from them. Therefore, it is impossible for it to exist even in name if it is investigated, and because it is not known in that way to ordinary people. Ordinary people do not accept it in that way after having investigated with reasoning. If it is not investigated, there is no contradiction in the aggregates being the basis of self-grasping, and it is merely that they have not engaged in investigating whether it is the same as or different from them, and so on. It is not that they believe it to be true (274n) for the reason that it is inexpressible. In the face of investigation with reasoning or the equipoise of the noble ones, all selves that are objects of innate and imputed grasping do not exist, because all of the lines of reasoning that will be explained will refute them. Thus, the self that is the object of innate grasping is like a Lasya who is imputed in dependence upon the aggregates, for example, like a pot that is imputed upon an assemblage. This does not preclude its existence as a convention without investigation, but if it is investigated, its existence by way of its own nature is precluded in both truths, because the view of the transitory collection that has it as its object gives rise to all defilements and faults in dependence upon the innate, and because the equipoise of the noble ones does not see it even in name. The imputed self is precluded in both truths, because it is not in accord with either the terminology of the noble ones or that of ordinary people, and because the view of self that has it as its object causes the innate view of self to increase, expand, and become entrenched.
