Some say that not accepting anything as either existent or nonexistent will turn into an extreme of nihilistic annihilationism. If one falls into the extreme of annihilationism because one does not accept both existence and nonexistence, then why does one not also fall into the extreme of permanence, existence, immutability, and eternity because one does not accept both existence and nonexistence? If one thinks that by refuting existence, one regards it as nonexistence, then why is it not the case that by refuting nonexistence, one regards it as existence? Because the reasons are the same. Therefore, the teacher said: By completely knowing exactly as it is, not desiring existence and nonexistence, if it becomes nonexistent because of that, why does it not become existent? If one refutes existence, in reality, this thoroughly establishes nonexistence. Likewise, if one refutes nonexistence, why does it not establish existence? As it is said. Therefore, neither existent nor nonexistent, neither both existent and nonexistent, nor is it the nature of both, liberated from the four extremes, that is what the Madhyamikas understand. And so on. The great Tsongkhapa of Shar said: Considering all phenomena as established by conventional valid cognition, they are not nonexistent in the conventional truth. They are not existent by nature, but they exist in name (267b), so existence is meaningful, and they do not exist in the ultimate truth, so nonexistence is not meaningful, so it exists as a dharma established as a basis, and even in the view of the noble ones, it exists in the way that dualistic appearances disappear. Thus he speaks. The great Jonangpa said: All ultimate truths are not nonexistent, all conventional truths are not existent. Thus they speak. Those who explain in this way have interpreted the scriptures in a perverse way, and have contaminated the ocean with the nectar of the Madhyamaka scriptures, the essence of the Buddha's teachings, with four great poisonous waters of extreme views. According to their view, neither existent nor nonexistent, neither both existent and nonexistent, nor is it the nature of both, liberated from the four extremes, that is what the Madhyamikas understand. It has become only that. In this way, the reality of all phenomena included in the two truths becomes non-elaborate, because in the respective positions of the two truths, there exists a life fortress that is difficult to destroy, which regards existence or nonexistence or the extremes of permanence and annihilation as real. Those who wish to protect the precious teachings of the Madhyamikas and have the power of accumulation and purification, should take a neutral attitude towards this view.
