When I have not seen you, I regard the world as having entered into peace; when I see you, I do not regard the world as having entered into peace. Thus it is said. Among these, the so-called "only this as a condition" means that whatever dharma is commonly known in the world as the cause of a certain result, that is its cause. This shows that it is separate from the causes established by other schools, such as the invisible Ishvara and the Alaya. If the Madhyamika school does not investigate, then when establishing conventional truth before others in the world, merely saying that its arising, ceasing, cause, and effect are merely hypothetical as commonly accepted in the world will completely refute the four extremes of arising. By refuting the four extremes of arising, it can also prevent the view of arising and ceasing that speaks of real existence. Establishing dependent origination and the arising of dependence, such as arising and ceasing, is the ultimate praise for the reason of establishing all dharmas as unborn. If it is such dependent origination, then the pervasion of establishing emptiness also abides in the conventional truth that is commonly accepted by others in the world, but not in the Madhyamika's own system. Because the Madhyamika school itself cannot find a way to establish it as reasonable when examining the conventional world of dependent origination. Therefore, using the reasoning of the arising and ceasing of dependence accepted by others to refute the four extremes of arising and ceasing accepted by other schools is already established in name. Although there are cases such as using arising and ceasing to prevent arising and ceasing, the meaning is not wrong, because it is the occasion of saying that what arises from conditions is said to be unborn. Therefore, one should rely on the meaning and not on the words. What arises from conditions is unborn, this is what the supreme wise ones have said. Thus it is said. If asked: Then should the Madhyamika school establish the conventional arising and so on in name with the reason of dependent origination? Answer: If the conventional arising and so on of the four extremes are established by that reason, it will become a contradictory reason, so it cannot be established. However, it is also not possible to establish the conventional arising and so on of dependent origination with that reason, because the reason and the dharma are not different entities. Thus, establishing the conventional arising, ceasing, cause, and effect with dependent origination is established at the time of non-investigation. After investigation, with the reason of dependent origination, dependent origination

If one strives to establish arising and so forth, it would be like an elephant's bath. If, after examination, one establishes the arising of dependent origination after having negated the arising of the four extremes, then one has deteriorated from abiding in the inexpressible Madhyamaka, having previously negated arising and so forth in both truths through various reasonings, and has entered back into the ranks of those who assert reality, because one initially strives to establish conventional arising as valid. In reality, if one imputes with a mind that holds onto arising and ceasing as characteristics and entities, then that imputation is no different from what is done by the arising and ceasing of the four extremes and what is done by the arising and ceasing of dependent origination, just as when bound, there is no difference in the act of binding between a gold rope and an iron rope. Moreover, if after examination one strives to establish the arising and ceasing of dependent origination, then to which of the arising and ceasing of the ultimate truth and the conventional truth does that arising and ceasing belong? If it is the former, it is not reasonable, because who could establish that in the ultimate truth, which is devoid of arising and ceasing? If it is the latter, it is also not reasonable, because Madhyamikas merely imitate the unexamined worldly expressions of conventional truth, and if they establish it after examination, then the arising and so forth of conventional truth (264a) would not be the object of negation by a sign, but would become the object of establishment. In that case, it would also become meaningless for Madhyamikas to examine and negate the individual entities and natures of the arising and so forth of conventional truth. If one establishes arising and ceasing after examination, then arising and ceasing would become amenable to examination. If one desires such an examinable arising and ceasing of dependent origination, then unless one accepts such a thing as a third truth that is not the two truths, such a phenomenon established by examination is impossible in the two truths, and who could establish it in that way? One must think carefully. The meaning of the words is that when Madhyamikas establish the arising and ceasing of cause and effect of dependent origination without examination, they do not impute upon the merely apparent worldly conventional truth, and therefore when they engage in acceptance and rejection in terms of conventions, they do not deteriorate from the nature of conventional truth, because they speak of the meaning of how things appear without adding or subtracting. Even so, if one establishes the arising and ceasing of dependent origination and so forth after examination, then in both truths
