Thus, the existence of other-powered substantially existent has been previously refuted, and without that, the wandering nature of phenomena that abandons the subject of phenomena is also not established. We Madhyamikas say as follows: In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra and others, it is also shown only according to the Madhyamika's view, and it is not shown according to the Yogacara's view, it was not taught by the compassionate one. In those sutras, all the distinctions of whether the three characteristics exist or not are all literally definitive meanings, because their meaning is not as literal, it is a definitive meaning, because it shows that all three characteristics are without self-nature, it is not taught according to the Yogacara's view, so it does not establish the sutra that teaches only mind. Seeing this meaning's power, the protector of the three realms, Drikungpa, said, "The sutra that teaches only mind is especially clear as the sutra that teaches Madhyamika," making a great lion's roar. Therefore, all the views of the respective substantialists such as Yogacara, which are established as contradictory to both truths, are not the intention of the Teacher's scriptures. If so, all the scriptures would become self-contradictory and harmed by reason, contradicting the vow to speak without fear, and all the scriptures would become different in words but the same in meaning, contradicting this, and the Teacher would become non-omniscient, teaching others without deciding on his own view. Not understanding this key point, some Zilungpas and others nowadays claim that the self-views of all four tenet systems have become the correct Madhyamika system, saying that because the extremes of permanence and annihilation of their own system have been eliminated, and because the Teacher has taught the Dharma that establishes Madhyamika, it is said. This is not established, because the three lower tenet systems draw the meaning of the Teacher's scriptures to support their own system, and if they draw it to support another system, then they only verbally respect the Teacher's words by prohibiting such explanations of the meaning of the scriptures. Because the Teacher has not established the four Madhyamikas that are established by reason and free from permanence and annihilation for each individual person, if they were established, then in the knowable, there would be four different establishments that are in accordance with the two truths and the four systems, and in that case, the lower systems would also become unharmed by the reason of the upper systems.

If one does not examine extremes such as good and bad, and whether or not there is a path to liberation, then even in the reputation of conventional terms, one will not find a place to establish them. Therefore, if the established tenets of the realists do not even accord with the intent of the scriptures they cite as the source of their claims, how can they possibly understand the ultimate intent that those scriptures reveal? For this reason, what the realists consider to be of ultimate meaning must mostly be interpreted as provisional meaning. If one regards scriptures of provisional meaning as being of ultimate meaning in their literal sense, then one completely reverses the intention of the Buddha. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'If one fully interprets the meaning according to the literal sound, one becomes arrogant and loses intelligence. Because one abandons what is well-spoken, one will be obscured by anger towards the Dharma, leading to ruin.' The meaning of the intermediate turning of the wheel is definitive meaning, while the final turning of the wheel has both provisional and definitive meanings. This is because the teaching that all phenomena are without inherent existence is definitive meaning, while the teachings of other-powered nature, the basis of all, self-awareness, self, permanence, non-emptiness, the cutting off of lineage, the determination of lineage, and the ultimate three vehicles are provisional meaning, because they do not accord with the meaning as grasped by the literal expression. Then, if the sutras say that the intermediate turning is of provisional meaning (249a) and the final turning is of definitive meaning, what is the explanation? Even if it is taught in that way for the sake of training disciples, there is no harm because this distinction between provisional and definitive meaning is not the ultimate distinction of intent. That is, the Buddha's three turnings of the wheel, the first, intermediate, and final, are made in accordance with the dispositions of trainees, namely, those who are not common to the lesser vehicle, those who are not common to the great vehicle, and those of various vehicles. In the first turning, the four noble truths are taught; in the intermediate turning, the absence of inherent existence is taught; and in the final turning, the three characteristics, etc., are taught. Those who hold to things as real regard the provisional meaning as definitive meaning and establish the definitive meaning teachings as provisional meaning, and thus interpret them as the intention of the Bhagavan. Those who do not perceive things as real do not hold the provisional meaning as definitive meaning, but hold the definitive meaning as definitive meaning, and thus interpret them as the intention of the Bhagavan. How the Buddha taught the provisional and definitive meaning teachings in the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, all of that has become a means for all trainees of the three vehicles to attain higher realms and definite goodness, without any exception, and therefore all those scriptures are the cause of liberation.
