It should be shown that way to those people. The reason is that in India, it seems that two different views of Madhyamaka and Chittamatra have arisen. Yogacharas consider the contents of Ornament of the Sutras and the Lankavatara Sutra, etc., to be about the Alaya-consciousness; some consider the Alaya-consciousness to be the seed of purity; some consider others to be dependent on others, and the completely established is the emptiness of the imputed; some consider the immaculate mind to be the ninth consciousness. Those who say that there is no self-nature are: in the realm of observation or the noble ones, there is a state of quiescence of existence and non-existence, etc., the true nature of each Buddha and sentient being is pure by nature, and becomes equality, but without observing the worldly realm, when distinguishing between samsara and nirvana, considering that sentient beings have the lineage of accomplishing Buddhahood in their continuum, and that the complete Buddha body from that lineage appears in accordance with the disciples, so it is said. As it is said: Because the perfect Buddha body appears, Likewise, the true nature is inseparable, Because there is lineage, all sentient beings, Always have the essence of the Buddha. Therefore, the harm to reality is: if understood according to the brief statement, then even mere words cannot be established, let alone the ultimate truth, because the Blessed One himself has forbidden it. In the Nirvana Sutra and other sutras, it is also repeatedly said that all sentient beings do not have the merits of signs and examples. In the impure state, there is no permanence, happiness, self, or purity, and it is also repeatedly said in the Jewel Garland, the Nirvana Sutra, and the Root Commentary of the Treatise on the Jewel Lineage, etc. If it is believed that the Tathagatagarbha is the self and the uncreated reality, then all refutations of the self of externalists will become meaningless. The commentary says: Just as the Tathagatagarbha is taught as provisional meaning in the sutras, so is Mind-Only also taught as provisional meaning. Some people think that the Tathagatagarbha mentioned by the Blessed One is the mind, as it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: Great wisdom, good and non-good are like this, the eight consciousnesses are. What are the eight consciousnesses? It is the Tathagatagarbha.

Because it proclaims "the mind-consciousness of name and form," and so forth. Because the very essence is shown to be provisional, the alaya-consciousness is also shown to be provisional. Similarly, all the scriptures that teach the extinction of lineage, the definite lineage, the final determination in the three vehicles, other-emptiness, and self-awareness are shown to be provisional by the scriptures of the Lankavatara Sutra. Second: If there is no object of knowledge, then knowledge is eliminated: "Easy to attain," say the Buddhas, "If there is no object of knowledge." If there is no object of knowledge, knowledge is blocked and accomplished, Therefore, first, the object of knowledge is negated. If the object of knowledge, the object, does not exist, then the knowledge that possesses the object is eliminated, as the Buddhas have said, because the object and the object-possessor are established in dependence. Just as the teacher first engages in the accumulation of merit, such as generosity, and then enters the accumulation of wisdom, so at first, by "whether or not external appearances exist," and so forth, the object of knowledge is negated, because if one realizes that the object of knowledge is without self, then later the blocking of knowledge itself will be accomplished, and for that very reason. Moreover, if there is no object of knowledge, then there is no knowledge, sometimes one realizes it only by oneself, and sometimes one realizes it even by a slight indication. Third: (246n) Having thus understood the history of the scriptures, Whatever sutra is not that very nature, but has meaning, Having understood that the provisional meaning is also spoken, one should guide, And understand that the one with the meaning of emptiness is definitive. Those with intelligence, having examined the subject matter of the provisional and definitive meanings just explained, should understand the history of the scriptures, that is, by what is the subject matter shown to be provisional and definitive. Then, for those sutras that do not directly clarify the thusness that is free from the eight extremes of dependent origination, arising, etc., but have the meaning of directly proclaiming arising and ceasing, self-establishment, etc., one should also understand that the provisional meaning is spoken in order to enter the profound meaning, and one should guide and explain those trainees who are to be tamed by those scriptures to enter the ultimate meaning, that is, the proponents of entities will say that the elements earth, water, fire, and wind are tangible, therefore they are not visible to the eye, but form is not like that, so it is visible to the eye. To this, the Madhyamikas will say that if that is the case, then the tangible elements that are the cause are not perceived by the eye, so the result produced by them, form, will not be established, therefore it is actually implied that form is not to be seen by the eye.
