Therefore, from the words of interpretable meaning, skillful means themselves generate the realization of definitive meaning. In the Praise of Transcending the World, it says: "If the elements are not apprehended by the eye, how can what arises from them be apprehended by the eye? When such words are spoken about form, your apprehension of form is reversed." It arises thus. Furthermore, those who speak of entities think that the meaning of impermanence in the sutras is that the former existent transforms into a non-existent meaning, and makes the latter existent into an existent meaning. However, the Madhyamikas say that even by speaking of impermanence as a non-existent meaning, impermanence cannot be established as truly existent, so the interpretable meaning of those who speak of entities (246b) becomes a provisional meaning, so that scripture should be known as entering into the definitive meaning of emptiness or for the sake of guidance. Thus it is taught. Any sutra that directly shows emptiness as being free from the eight extremes, such as dependent arising, etc., that has this meaning, know that it is truly definitive meaning, because the meaning of that sutra cannot be turned into another guiding meaning. This is the distinction between interpretable and definitive, as it says in the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra: "As emptiness is explained by the Sugata, know the distinctions of the definitive sutras. Whatever sutra teaches sentient beings, individuals, and persons, know that all those teachings are of interpretable meaning." And: "In thousands of world realms, whatever sutras I have spoken, the letters are different but the meaning is the same, they cannot be fully proclaimed. If one contemplates one thing, all of those will become meditation, all the many teachings of all the Buddhas, those that are greatly shown in the world, all phenomena are without self. Whoever is skilled in meaning, if they study diligently in this place, it will not be difficult to find the Buddha's teachings." Also, in the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence, it says: "What is a sutra of interpretable meaning? Whatever sutra speaks of conventional truth, that is of interpretable meaning. What is a sutra of definitive meaning? Whatever sutra is spoken for the sake of manifesting ultimate truth, this is of definitive meaning. Whatever sutra speaks of various words and letters (247a), that is of interpretable meaning. Whatever sutra speaks of what is profound, difficult to see, and difficult to comprehend, that is of definitive meaning. Whatever sutra speaks of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, persons, individuals, etc.,

As it is said that the sounds and various languages of those born of power, sons of power, authors, and experiencers are like having a master when there is none, this is provisional meaning. From whatever sutra it is said that emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-action, unborn, unarisen, non-existent, without sentient beings, without life, without person, without self, and the doors of liberation, this is definitive meaning. Thus it is said. Its meaning is that the directly taught meaning of the sutra is harmed by reason, this is provisional meaning, in order to make the disciples initially enter the path and ripen their continuum, through various words and letters, in accordance with the wishes of each individual, mainly explaining the conventional truth. Although the direct meaning of the words thus taught is harmed by reason, it is said in order to gradually guide the disciples. The directly taught meaning of the sutra is not harmed by reason, this is definitive meaning, in order to make the disciples enter the fruit and liberate their continuum, through the doors of profundity, difficult to see, and primordially peaceful, in accordance with the wisdom of the noble ones, explaining the ultimate truth, the grasping of reality is not harmed by reason, and in the moment of teaching, the meaning is understood and liberation is attained (247b). Then, in the "Noble Explanation of the Thought", it is said that the sutras that teach all phenomena as without essence are provisional meaning, and the sutras that teach that there is no completely imputed, but there are other-powered and perfectly established are definitive meaning, how is that? To this, the Mind-Only school says, that is according to the literal meaning, such as the middle turning of the wheel of the Dharma in the Mother Sutra and others, teaching that all phenomena are without essence is provisional meaning, and the final turning of the wheel of the Dharma in this sutra and others, separately teaching existence and non-existence from the three characteristics is definitive meaning. They say this. This is completely speaking without having understood the intention of the Bhagavan, because the direct teaching of all phenomena as empty of essence is definitive meaning, because there is no harm to it, and it prevents and will prevent the four extremes of birth and so on that hope to harm it, and if all phenomena were not empty from the beginning, then it would contradict all the terms of past and future, and the latter two characteristics are truly existent and would be harmed by reason.
