Thus, a designation is established. If someone doubts why others do not establish the designation in this way and responds, it is unreasonable. Because, although worldly people acknowledge that consciousnesses of different continuums are different entities, the Madhyamikas do not acknowledge them as other. Third, therefore, if there is no self-awareness, by what will your dependent arising be held? Since the agent, action, and object are not one, it is not reasonable for it to hold itself. O Mind-Only school, by what will the consciousness of your dependent arising, which is the object-possessor, be held? It certainly cannot be held. Because, as just explained, there is no self-awareness, and also because there is no other-awareness. It is not reasonable for that consciousness to hold itself, because the agent, action, and object are not one. Just as the cutter, the person, and the tree to be cut, and cutting it into pieces, are not one. The *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra* says: Just as a sword cannot cut its own blade, and the fingertip cannot touch itself, so is the self-aware mind. So it is said. Third, if the unproduced and unknown, possessing self-nature, the entity of dependent arising, truly exists, then by what reason should this not exist? What harm does a barren woman's child cause to others? Now, it is unreasonable to think that dependent arising is the realm of non-conceptual wisdom, not the realm of conceptualization. If dependent arising, as previously explained, is not produced from self or other, and is a self-nature that cannot be known by any self or other, and dependent arising exists as an entity of non-conceptual essence, then by what reason does the barren woman's child also exist in the same way? Therefore, it is thought that dependent arising exists, but the barren woman's child should not exist? What harm does saying this cause to other Mind-Only schools? (231b) What benefit does dependent arising have? Therefore, with equality between near and far, may the barren woman's child also exist like dependent arising, in the realm of noble wisdom, which is free from conceptualization, in an inexpressible nature. Dependent arising is the object of noble wisdom. The *Ornament of the Sūtras* says: If that is not, then the cause of that, how can it be clearly observed? If it abides in such a way, it is otherness, observing non-reality, conceptualization. Like the world

Not mistaken. From that cause, one enjoys whatever one desires. Likewise, diligently keeping vows without error, one is reborn elsewhere and enjoys whatever one desires. Thus it is said. Therefore, the three realms of conditioned phenomena, on the unreal imputed nature, with extremely pure wisdom, are seen with the meaning of non-duality. Thus it is said. If one asks: If so, does this contradict the Madhyamaka school's statement that the other-powered is not the object of ultimate wisdom? It does not contradict, because the Madhyamaka and Mind-Only schools are separately determined. The Madhyamaka school says that the other-powered, which is the nature of unreal imputation, is not the object of the noble equipoise. The Mind-Only school says that the other-powered, which is only consciousness, is the object of both equipoise and subsequent attainment, so it does not contradict when based on one's own system. Otherwise, in all the Mind-Only treatises, how is it not contradictory that the other-powered is empty of the imputed, is the perfectly established, and that if one observes the other-powered from the aspect of the perfectly established, it is said to be the ultimate truth, and that equipoise is said to be the object of the perfectly established, etc.? Because without observing the basis of distinction, such as mere consciousness, mere experience, and mere clarity, there cannot be a non-dual consciousness, and because it is unreasonable to say that the other-powered is the cause of both complete defilement and complete purification. Fourth, if there is other-powered, then one falls from the conventional truth. If one falls from the two truths, then one does not attain liberation. There are three reasons for this. First, 1. What does not exist cannot be a cause, 2. It contradicts the world. First: When there is not even a little other-powered, then what will become the cause of the conventional? If one thinks: The existence of the other-powered, which is the cause of establishing reality, is reasonable. But that is also unreasonable, because what will become the cause of conventional things will ultimately not become, because when there is no establisher and there is a destroyer, the very nature of the other-powered is not even a little. This, when connecting to the previous statement, the old commentary says: It is not the intention of the root text, commentary, and explanation, etc. Second: According to others' view, by clinging to substance, all the worldly established conventions will also be destroyed. The Mind-Only school acknowledges that the cause of conventional nominal terms is the other-powered, so if that is the case, then since it is not the cause of nominal terms, the mind
