In the commentary on the "Compendium of Empty Meaning," quoting the Yogachara school's treatise, it says: "Knowing emptiness is called consciousness, besides this, there is nothing else, because emptiness is already empty, it is considered to be the nature of non-duality." This is established by this. Moreover, according to the Other-powered nature as accepted by the proponents of true appearance, and the Other-powered nature as accepted by the proponents of false appearance, it seems that the two truths are distinguished based on the power of establishment that each posits. According to the proponents of true appearance, the appearance of the apprehended object, which has become the nature of consciousness, is the ultimate truth. According to the proponents of false appearance, it is impossible for the appearance of the apprehended object to be established as the nature of consciousness. Therefore, all imputations established by such appearances of consciousness are merely conventional truths and not ultimate truths. Such statements are already well-known and are not refuted. In the second (page 227a), there are three points: brief statement, refutation of the establishment of mindfulness, and presentation of other ways of refutation. First: It is not established that it experiences itself. Others cannot apprehend others, but self-awareness exists because oneself apprehends oneself. For example, like a lamp illuminating itself. If one says that, it is not established that the Other-powered nature experiences itself, because it is contradictory for oneself to act upon oneself. It is like a well-trained, heavy-axed person who cannot ride on his own shoulders. Second: There are two points: the unestablished cannot establish the unestablished, and even if self-awareness is established, mindfulness cannot be established. First: If it is established from later mindfulness, then it is said to establish the unestablished, but this unestablished is not the establisher. Here, some Vijnanavadins, like the Sautrantikas, establish self-awareness and then establish the Other-powered nature experiencing itself. Thus, all consciousnesses are knowers of both their own nature and the object. For example, fire, from the moment it arises, is both its own self-illuminating nature and the illuminator of pots and so on. Similarly, sound expresses both its own nature and the object. Therefore, even those who do not accept self-awareness must necessarily accept self-awareness as a property. If they do not accept it, then the consciousness of the object, such as "I see form," and the consciousness of the object-possessor experiencing the object, will not become mindfulness. If it is unestablished, then it becomes established. Mindfulness is the experiencer of the object-possessor, so consciousness, too, will not become a mem

For the sake of transformation. Moreover, if there is no self-awareness, it will also become that one has not experienced oneself, and if others experience oneself, it will also lead to infinite proliferation (227b). Two simultaneous consciousnesses cannot simultaneously sever two objects of consciousness either, because all consciousnesses are objects of other consciousnesses, and sentient beings are one continuum of consciousness. When multiple consciousnesses appear to arise simultaneously, it is like piercing a hundred lotus petals, the successive occurrences are mistaken for one because of the speed of entry. Therefore, if self-awareness is not accepted, the fault of infinite proliferation cannot be avoided. Moreover, the memory of both the form I saw before and the consciousness of seeing it as such arises later, which is established. If the nature of the consciousness that saw the form before does not perceive itself as self-aware, it is impossible to remember its object. If the memory of both objects in later times thinks, "I saw the form before," then its cause, the experience of both the object and consciousness themselves, is established. Self-awareness with the meaning of self-experience is established, and if it is established, one asks: Is it known by itself as being controlled by another? If so, establishing other-control as substantial and positing memory as the establisher, then in order to establish self-awareness that is not established in the ultimate sense. Because this specifically stated memory is not the establisher of that self-awareness, because like self-awareness, memory is also not established in the ultimate sense, because it does not arise from self, other, etc. However, if one examines, memory cannot be established as the establisher of self-awareness in the ultimate sense, but if one thinks that memory establishes self-awareness in the conventional sense without examination, then it cannot be established in that way even in the conventional sense (228a), if in the conventional sense, self-awareness and memory are definitely related as cause and effect like smoke and fire, then it could be established, but because such a cause-and-effect relationship is not established, because self-awareness is not only the cause of memory, and if self-awareness itself is not established, then the result, memory, which is caused by it, will also not be established. Thus, even if there is no self-awareness in the conventional sense, only memory will arise, because it arises from the conditions that give rise to memory. Just seeing water and fire does not necessarily require crystal and fire crystal, but water and fire arise from rain and rubbing wood, rubbing pads, etc.
