Due to the defilement of mantras on the ground (218b), such as the appearance of illusory horses and cattle, it symbolizes all phenomena arising from conditions. When something is assembled or defiled by any condition, it is dependent on that, and both its appearance, object, and consciousness arise. However, when it is separated from the defilement assembled by that condition, then dependent on that, all the elaborations of its appearance, object, and consciousness are pacified, because there is no object of focus. Therefore, in the Mother Sutra, it is said: "If there were a dharma superior to the Tathagata, it would be like an illusion or a dream." In short, the saying that a thought of pus arises in a flowing river also refers to the fact that two individuals, a human and a preta, can see each other and dwell together. In front of both of them, in a place without any obscuration or obstruction, a preta has the thought of a river of pus, and a human has the thought of a river of water. However, the human's river of water does not appear as the preta's thought of pus, nor does the preta's river of pus appear as the human's thought of water. This is because the object of appearance, one self-established entity, is transformed into multiple self-established entities in front of different individuals by multiple self-established conditions. Each different thing is not established as having the ability to perform its own function. If the river of water appearing to humans is not established as the nature and essence of a river of water, then there is no basis for distinction. Therefore, pretas cannot focus on the newly born river of pus as a characteristic, whether it existed there before or not. Therefore, even if there is no basis for anything that should be considered an object in any place, different individuals can focus on limitless conflicting dharmas in any place (219a). Even in the space of a minute particle, due to the power of karma, different realms of beings can have the appearance of countless millions of worlds, as explained in those sutras. Moreover, we cannot comprehend its nature with our own perception. In conventional truth, the power of karma, cause and effect, wish-fulfilling jewels, and knowledge mantras are also said to be inconceivable. If it were not so, as Manjushri advised the great Tsongkhapa, in a river of clear water, a river of blood and a river of pus appear. Newly born things obscure each other among sentient beings, but do not obscure each sentient being individually.

If it must be said that things that have a function are truly existent, then according to the views of the Madhyamikas who previously traveled between China and Tibet, this is unreasonable. Because, if the declaration of Madhyamika is to eliminate both extremes of clinging to all dharmas as truly existent and denying their non-existence, then the conventional, infallible, seemingly self-existent that is seen by the six types of beings, seems to be established in the face of one's own mind not being defiled by temporary causes of confusion, but in reality it is not, because it is false and deceptive. Even if something is established by valid cognition in the face of one's own mind not being defiled by temporary causes of confusion, it does not prove its existence, and the mind not defiled by temporary causes of confusion cannot be established as valid cognition, because it is a non-valid (219b) consciousness defiled by fundamental causes of confusion. For the confusion defiled by conditions, all the characteristics of conventional objects and consciousness are merely imputed, and such a thing is established as having a function because the noble ones do not see anything when they equally abide in the meaning of the two truths of conventional reality. Therefore, it is widely proclaimed that all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana, from form to omniscience, do not have the nature of things established by nominal valid cognition, and there is no movement other than emptiness in equality. If the consciousness with objects and the subject of the six types of beings in samsara are not self-established, then how can the consciousness with objects and the subject of non-abiding nirvana that transcends this be self-established? For example, dreaming of crossing a great river and reaching the other shore, it is actually impossible to reach the other shore, because even the river itself does not exist there, it is like that. Therefore, as it is said: The Tathagata is also like an illusion and a dream, and even if there is a dharma that surpasses the Tathagata, it is like an illusion and a dream. In this way, combining the meaning with the metaphor, then all things that encompass samsara and nirvana, as well as the lineage of Buddhas and sentient beings, are empty and unestablished, thereby uniting in equality. Just as an illusory horse is empty in itself and does not exist there.
