Having taught thus, the opponent says that the consciousness of being awake is empty of meaning, because it is consciousness, like the consciousness of a dream. And, the object of focus in the state of being awake is of a false nature, because it is an object, like the object of a dream. And, defilement and purification cannot exist without other power, because there is no basis, like a garment of tortoise hair. Similarly, applying the example of dizziness, etc., whatever answers are given by these advocates of consciousness, are seen by the wise Madhyamikas as being the same as the proposition, and have no power to establish anything, so they are meaningless, and all arguments asserting the existence of consciousness are dispelled, because relative to the consciousness of dreams and dizziness, etc., it is not possible to establish emptiness of meaning and that the object is of a false nature, and relative to non-deluded consciousness, because it is consciousness, and other-power, etc., are also the same as what is to be established. Secondly, the Buddhas have never taught that there is a real thing at any time. There is no harm of scripture in establishing that consciousness is not truly existent, because the perfect Buddhas have never taught that the aggregates, elements, sense-bases, etc., exist as real things at any time, place, or circumstance. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: "The three realms are merely imputed, their nature is without reality. The nature of imputed things is conceived by the conceptualizers. Without self-nature and without consciousness, without alaya and without things, evil children are conceptualizers, like corpses, therefore these are imputed." Thus it is said. The Mind-Only proponents believe that among the three characteristics, saying that the self-nature of other-dependence is emptiness through the door of one-without-one emptiness is not saying emptiness without error. Great wisdom, one-without-one emptiness is the worst of all emptinesses. You should abandon it. Thus it is said. Its meaning is transformed here, such as saying, cow-dharma, you do not exist, because you are not a horse. This is unreasonable, because although a cow is empty of a horse, it is not empty of its own nature, so that dharma is not emptiness and is established.

For example, in the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son, it can be understood from the classification of the Dharma-nature's self-mastery, and from the way of explaining the emptiness of its own entity. Third, it is divided into three parts: all three are unborn, and if not, then stating the harm. The first part is: The yogi, through the oral instructions of the guru, sees the ground filled with skeletons. There, too, he sees that all three are unborn, in order to show the reversed attention. If it were not that there is no consciousness without an object, when the yogi relies on the guru's oral instructions (218a) to meditate on ugliness, what is it that he sees the ground covering the end of the ocean filled with skeletons? There, too, it is only a manifestation due to conditions, and it is seen that all three, object, faculty, and consciousness, are unborn, because that samadhi is not by the power of true attention, but by the power of reversed attention, as shown in the scriptures. The second part is: How are the objects of your faculty consciousness? If the impure mind also transforms in that way, then the other who focuses on that object will also realize that it will not become false. Just as the yogi sees, if one focuses on that object, the other, that is, those who are not yogis, will also realize the skeletons, etc., because the object of the impure contemplation of skeletons, etc., will also become true. For example, when you look at the object of your faculty consciousness, such as a vase, just as one of those who focus on that object gives rise to an eye consciousness with that aspect, others will also give rise to it, just like that. If you admit it, because of the admission, that samadhi will also not become attention that is not true. Fourth: Similar to the faculty with cataracts, the river is also the consciousness of pus for the pretas. Just as for a person with a faculty with cataracts, in the confused appearance, both the object and the consciousness appear to exist, but in the non-confused appearance, neither appears to exist. Similarly, for rivers such as the Ganges, the consciousness of pus that appears to the pretas is also because in the confused appearance stained by karma, both the object and the consciousness of the pus appearance appear to exist, but in the non-confused, that is, the unstained appearance, neither appears to exist. This explains stones, wood, eyes, etc.
