Because it is weak. Therefore, it is excluded by the statement "knowledge arises and does not arise from the complete and incomplete maturation of ability," because the statement "without an object of knowledge, there is no knowledge" is established. Secondly, it is divided into the former position and its refutation. The first part is divided into: showing the nature of the sense faculty and the object, knowledge arises from ability even without an object, and showing three parts by example. The first part is: What is the self-power that causes the arising of eye consciousness? It immediately arises and transforms completely, That power of the basis of one's own consciousness, The world knows and calls it the material eye faculty. The Mind-Only school believes that by imputing ability to the sense faculty and the object, even without the object faculty that has become a form, it is believed that knowledge can arise, and this meaning is established. That is to say, the self-power of the eye faculty's consciousness arising is that when the previous consciousness (215b) that is in accordance with the same kind ceases, the subsequent consciousness that is left behind is completely matured, and from then on, just as the habits of the object faculty are left behind, following that kind of appearance, the eye consciousness completely arises and transforms. From which uninterrupted ability of consciousness arises, the world, due to ignorance, knows and calls it the material eye faculty, but in reality, there are no eye, ear, etc. faculties that are different from consciousness. The second is: Here, the various consciousnesses arising from the sense faculties, Without relying on external objects, from one's own seed, Not understanding the nature of the appearance of blue, etc., Sentient beings think and grasp external objects. Showing that there is no sense faculty different from consciousness, and the object is also not different from consciousness. Here, Bandhuka and Kingśuka, etc. appear as red, just like a color-changing mirror, without relying on external colors to change, but appearing as red itself. The various consciousnesses arising from the eye and other sense faculties do not rely on external objects such as blue, but from the ability projected by one's own seed that has been passed down from beginningless time, and the nature of the appearance of blue, etc. as objects that correspond to it arises, but sentient beings in the world think that what appears in consciousness is an external object, and they believe it to be true. For example, on the edge of a very clear lake,

Just as the image of a jewel hanging on the branch of a grown tree appears in the water, although it looks like an external jewel, it does not actually exist, so too, the image of things appearing in consciousness is not different from consciousness itself. Therefore, the Mind-Only school believes that all the external objects such as form, etc., spoken of by the Blessed One (216a) are provisional meanings, and the definitive meaning is that the power of clinging to the habits of form, etc., matures, just as light arises from a flame, knowledge itself appears as the aspect of the sense object of the external world, and it is considered the birthplace of the sense object, so it is not contradictory to the classification of aggregates, elements, and sources, and the basis of emptiness of inner and outer emptiness is also the same. Therefore, the cessation of form, etc., is the cessation of form, etc., that are imputed by external objects, but not the imputed and the nature of reality's form, etc. Because the sutras say that from form to omniscience, there are three types of form: the imputed, the imputed, and the nature of reality. This is their thought. Third: In dreams, there is no other object of form; from the maturation of one's own power, the mind appears in that form. It is the same when awake; without external objects, there is only mind. Here, even when awake, there are no external objects, only the consciousness of mind exists. For example, just as in a dream, there are no other objects such as form, etc., but only the power that is in accordance with oneself matures, and the mind of the mind that has the aspect of the object such as form, etc., arises, so it is when awake. Second, there are obstacles and no establishment. First, if consciousness arises from power, then eye consciousness should arise in the blind, and the presence or absence of objects and senses is the same in dreams. First, just as without eyes, in a dream, the mind of the mind that appears as blue, etc., arises, so too, without the eye sense, from the maturation of one's own seed, why does it not arise here in the blind? Just as without eyes and form, in a dream, from the maturation of one's own habits, the mind of the mind that manifests objects such as blue, etc., arises, similar to eye consciousness, then, (216b) in the waking state, for the blind, just like the non-blind, from the maturation of one's own seed, in the waking state, why does the mind of the mind that grasps blue in that way not arise? It will arise.
