Because the noble saints who realized that the nature of all phenomena is emptiness, that they are not established by themselves, have said so. Āryadeva said, "Without a result, there is no cause, and the cause itself is not real. Therefore, all results should become the nature of the cause." Also, as it says in the treatise, "If something is established by dependence, it also depends on another. If what is depended upon is established, then what is established by depending on what?" The meaning of these quotes is that consciousness cannot be established without the establishment of capacity, because capacity is accepted as the cause of consciousness. Capacity also cannot be established without the establishment of consciousness, because the so-called "capacity of consciousness" is capacity qualified by consciousness. Therefore, if both are to be established at the same time, neither can become the basis for establishment, and if one is not established, neither can be established. The nature of such an established thing does not actually exist. Furthermore, it says, "If something is established by dependence, how does it depend when it is not established? If it is said to depend when it is established, then it is not appropriate to depend." That is the meaning of that. If consciousness is established by depending on capacity, does it depend on an unestablished or an established capacity? According to the first, because it is not established, it does not depend on capacity like a donkey's horn. According to the second, because it is established, it is not appropriate to depend on it. Regarding the second, there are two situations: the extreme of one arising from another, and the refutation of the answer that eliminates that fault. The first situation is: "If it changes from the ripening of a ceased capacity, then another will arise from another's capacity. Constant phenomena are mutually different there. Therefore, everything will arise from everything." Now, if the consciousness that arises and ceases continuously establishes the difference of capacity on the ālaya for the sake of the result, then consciousness will arise from the maturation of the ceased capacity of consciousness. Those who accept the ālaya think that it arises from the present capacity, while the Mind-Only school that does not accept it thinks that it arises from the past capacity. In that case, another consciousness will arise from the capacity of another consciousness, because the moments of consciousness before and after

The continuous succession that proceeds without interruption, whose earlier and later moments are distinct from each other within that succession, and because others acknowledge their existence as other. If it is asserted that if another arises dependent on another, then thick darkness would also arise from a flame. Because it has already been prevented in etc. Because there is no difference in otherness, all things would arise from all things. This is the expansion of Tanu, the root of the Sanskrit word Tantra for continuum. Because it occurs continuously, the earlier and later moments of the constituents of the continuum have different powers to prevent others from producing other fruits, which in effect prevents the earlier seed from producing the later sprout. Not understanding the point like this, later Tibetan Madhyamikas self-righteously strive to prove that the sprout arises from the substance of the seed, which is slandering the good system, what is that? Secondly, there are two: the defense against faults and the refutation of it. The first is: If there is a difference in the continuum there, because they do not have a difference in the continuum, there is no fault. If it is said that in the process of the mind-consciousness continuum, although the earlier and later moments of the substance in which the continuum exists are different from each other, there is only one continuum and no difference between the earlier and later moments, therefore there is no fault of everything arising from everything. The second is: This is what needs to be proven. Because there is no time for non-different continuum. The dharmas that depend on Maitreya and Nearsameness, because they are otherness, do not belong to one continuum. Whatever is individually distinct by its own characteristic, it is not reasonable for them to belong to one continuum. If it is said that there is no fault in this way, but this has not been established, so this is what needs to be proven, because there is no time for non-different continuum, because for the individual substances of the earlier and later moments of mind-consciousness, there is no opportunity to follow the non-different same continuum. Just like Maitreya and Nearsameness, the dharmas that depend on others, because they are otherness, do not belong to one continuum, whatever is individually distinct by its own characteristic of the earlier and later moments of mind-consciousness, it is not possible for them to belong to one continuum,
