Having realized that all phenomena are without inherent existence, one will attain Nirvana. Whether or not Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas can actually generate realization on that basis, because it has been taught that all phenomena are impermanent, therefore, the Sravakas, who assert the tenet of clinging to entities, are accepted as diligently engaging in the accumulation of discipline, listening, and (50a) meditation, etc., in order to seek Nirvana on their own path. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "From the Great Vehicle, the unborn is taught; What is exhausted by others is emptiness; Exhaustion and non-arising have the same meaning; Therefore, be patient with that." And as it is said in the Root Verses: "The Blessed One, knowing existence and non-existence, From the instruction to Katyayana, Rejected both existence and non-existence." If Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas can abandon the obscurations to knowledge because they realize the absence of self of phenomena, is that so? It is not so, because if that were the case, then the path of seeing of the Great Vehicle itself would become the abandonment of all obscurations. Therefore, Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not cultivate the absence of self of phenomena for countless eons in order to abandon the obscurations to knowledge, but rather to accomplish their own fruit, such as three lifetimes, and become that. Some think, then, will the obscurations to knowledge that are abandoned by Bodhisattvas below the sixth ground be abandoned by those who enter the realm of the Nirvana without remainder of the Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas and abide there for countless eons? Because those people have cultivated the absence of self of phenomena for countless eons, and the power of the wisdom of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot overwhelm it. To this, there are two answers, real and similar. The first is: This is not similar, because the Sravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhat abides in the cessation of the absence of self of phenomena, therefore, although they cultivate it, they do not cultivate it for the purpose of abandoning the obscurations to knowledge, and even if the Sravaka and Pratyekabuddha were to cultivate for that purpose, (50b) they would not be able to abandon the obscurations to knowledge like a Bodhisattva because of their dull faculties. The second is: The pervasion is not certain, because Bodhisattvas below the seventh ground would become abandoning the afflicted mind and all afflictions, because according to your statement, Sravakas have not completely realized the absence of self of phenomena, and those who have just become Sravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats have not cultivated the absence of self of persons for a long time, so they would abandon those.

Since Bodhisattvas have become accustomed to the two selflessnesses for countless eons. Then the Mahayana teachings would become meaningless, since the Hearer-Solitary Realizer's vehicle also teaches the selflessness of phenomena, and there is no difference in the Dharma teachings of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, if you think so. It is not established that there is no difference. Because the Dharma of the Great Vehicle is not just teaching the selflessness of phenomena, but also teaching the ten great grounds and perfections and aspirations of the Bodhisattvas, and immeasurable things such as great compassion, and the complete dedication of great enlightenment, and the two accumulations, and on top of one atom, the Buddha himself dwells, gathering retinues equal to the number of those atoms, teaching the two truths and other dharmas, because it is not omniscient, so there are infinite dharmic natures that are inconceivable, because it teaches those. As it is said. In the Precious Garland it says: The Hearer Vehicle, from that, Bodhicitta aspirations and conduct, Complete dedication is not explained, How can one become a Bodhisattva? The meaning of abiding in Bodhisattva conduct, Is not taught in the Sutras, It is taught in the Great Vehicle, Therefore, the wise (51a) ones hold it. So it is said. Some people think that it is unreasonable that the perfections and so on are not taught in the Hearer-Solitary Realizer's vehicle, because there there are giving and so on that are grasped by the wisdom that realizes the selflessness of phenomena. It is not certain, because there is no giving and so on with six noble qualities, such as dedicating it for the benefit of sentient beings, or possessing four dharmas, or possessing four qualities, or possessing eight, or possessing twelve noble qualities, and so on. So, is it not whether or not it is grasped by the realization of the selflessness of phenomena that determines whether giving and so on is the perfection of giving? That is established on the basis of Bodhisattvas. Such giving and so on, if it has not transcended the world, is just giving and so on, and if it has transcended it, it is established as a perfection, this is a general statement. The meaning of the words is that the actions of the three doors grasped by the realization of the two selflessnesses of the Hearer-Solitary Realizer Noble Ones will not become grounds and perfections, because they only seek liberation from those, and not to learn and enter into grounds and perfections and so on for the sake of knowing the knowable, which is the infinite object of knowledge, for the benefit of others. In the Hearer's vehicle, the selflessness of phenomena is briefly
