It is necessary to indicate only the brief part, but not the extensive part, because if the brief part is not indicated, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas will not become Arhats, and even if the extensive part is indicated, it is not their object. As it is said, in the "Praise of the Transcendent World," "Without realizing the absence of characteristics, you said there is no liberation. Therefore, in the Mahayana, you have fully indicated it." (51b) Regarding the meaning of the extensive and brief of selflessness of phenomena. Some Tibetans think that the object to be realized, the selflessness of phenomena, is established from the aspect of its own nature being extensive or brief, and the reasoning that proves it is established from the aspect of being extensive or brief, but this is not reasonable, because the object to be realized, the selflessness of phenomena, is not established by its own nature. Therefore, neither extensive nor brief can be determined. Dharma refers to clinging to characteristics, and merely understanding that it is empty of characteristics is called selflessness of phenomena, because it is the same for the three noble ones. Beyond that, a more extensive selflessness of phenomena is not something even Bodhisattva Aryas can realize. If it can be established by a brief means of proof, then an extensive means of proof is also unnecessary, because it would become proving what is already proven. If it cannot be established by a brief means, then to establish it, it would be reasonable to show an extremely extensive selflessness of phenomena even to Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Therefore, the meaning of the extensive and brief of selflessness of phenomena is that the nature of the selflessness of dharmata, in relation to all phenomena of conventional truth that are the basis of differentiation, is determined by whether or not it manifests as an interdependent relationship. Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas only realize that, among the aggregates, elements, and sources gathered by their own continuum, the part accumulated by afflictions, and the Dharma of the truth of the undefiled path, are not established by their own nature. Other than that, the cause not accumulated by karma and afflictions gathered by their own continuum—the Tathagatagarbha, and relying on that, the inconceivable nature of all conventional appearances (52a), such as the manifestation of Buddhas equal to the number of atoms on a single atom through the actions of accumulation and purification by Bodhisattva Aryas, and the fruit thus realized—the Dharmakaya and the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu, that is, the body and wisdom of the Buddha ground, etc., in relation to all knowable objects that are phenomena of dharmata, because they do not manifest dharmata. Those Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas

Because it is not the omniscient one who knows all knowable things. In particular, as a subject of dharma, the nature of reality based on the Dharmakaya and the wisdom of Dharmadhatu, is not to be realized by anyone other than the Buddha himself who possesses the Dharmakaya, neither by Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, nor Bodhisattvas, because it is not within the scope of the consciousness that has not cleared away the habitual tendencies of the three obscurations' conceptualizations. Not only this teacher thinks so, but also the teacher Lekdenje (Sthiramati) thinks so. In the Madhyamika Heart Essence, it says: "Possessing countless merits and accumulations, Knowing the limitless knowable, This Dharmakaya of the Buddhas, Is the pacification of proliferation, it is peaceful. The eye of flesh does not see it thus, The eye of the gods does not see it, With conceptual and non-conceptual, Consciousness also is difficult to see. The high place is not the realm of the sinful, Without afflictions, it is not with them, Just as the blind do not see the realm of the sun, That also is not the realm of conceptualization." Furthermore, those Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who are liberated from philosophical tenets and have attained realization, from the perspective of not clinging to the truly established cessation, it can be established that they have realized the absence of self of phenomena, but because they realize that cessation is unconditioned, it can also be said that they have not cultivated the extensive absence of self of phenomena. It is permissible to say it in one way that, although they only realize the absence of self of conditioned phenomena as not truly existent, they have not realized the unconditioned phenomena that do not exist there as being extensive and ultimate, free from elaboration. Therefore, even in that case, from the perspective of the object to be proven, the absence of self of phenomena, they have not realized the extensive absence of self of phenomena, although they have only realized the absence of self and the absence of truth, which are to be proven, and have realized the mere negation that is free from expansion and contraction, they do not hold onto the base and reverse of some of the four truths of phenomena as being self, and because they have not realized the absence of self, they have not realized the extensive absence of self, that is, they have not realized it ultimately, this is certain. If it is said: Then the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have not realized the absence of self of phenomena, because they have not realized it from the base and reverse of some phenomena. Then it can be said: Then the eye consciousness of Devadatta has not realized blue, because it has not realized all the blue that exists in the knowable. Then it can be said: Then that Shravaka Arhat is a Mahayanist, because a Madhyamika who has generated the realization of the two absences of self in his mindstream.
