The first chapter of Entering the Bodhisattva's Way, the Joyful Land. The first chapter of Entering the Bodhisattva's Way, the Joyful Land. The nature of the treatise to be composed is explained in detail. There are two parts: the explanation of the cause, the bodhisattva's ground, and the effect, the Buddha's ground. The first part has two sections: the actual ten grounds and the explanation of their qualities. The first part includes: the Joyful Ground, the Immaculate Ground, the Luminous Ground, the Radiant Ground, the Difficult to Tame Ground, the Manifest Ground, the Far-Reaching Ground, the Immovable Ground, the Good Intelligence Ground, and the Cloud of Dharma Ground. The first part has three sections: briefly stating the essence of the ground, the basis of distinction; extensively explaining the qualities of the ground, the distinguishing characteristics; and concluding by praising the qualities of the ground. The first is: The sons of the Victorious Ones, whose minds go to all beings, being under the power of compassion to liberate them, dedicating with the aspiration of Samantabhadra to the Joyful Ground, that which abides there is called the first. The stainless wisdom of the Bodhisattvas, which is seized by means such as compassion, is divided into parts, and is called the ground, because it becomes the support or place of qualities. Just as the world is known as the ground for support. The grounds are not different in their own essence, because they are not different in the stainless wisdom that realizes emptiness. As it is said: Just as the traces of birds in the sky cannot be spoken of or seen by the wise, so all the grounds of the sons of the Victorious Ones cannot be spoken of, how much less can they be heard? Therefore, the distinction of the grounds is made by the difference in the number of qualities that increase on that ground, the power of miracles, the practice of the six perfections such as giving, and the way of taking bodies as the result of ripening increases. The result of ripening is (if one obtains the ground, then their body etc. is the stainless fruit of virtue, then how can it be established as the result of ripening? Because the result of ripening only exists for non-virtuous and virtuous contaminated things. If one thinks about it, in some old Kadampa texts, it is written that although there is no contaminated virtuous result of ripening of afflictive obscurations for the noble ones, there is a contaminated virtuous result of ripening of cognitive obscurations, so it is established as the result of ripening. From the first to the tenth ground, Jambudvipa and Sumeru

Tushita, Sunirmita, Tushita, Paranirmita-vasavartin, the realm of a thousand, the realm of two thousand, the realm of three thousand, and the king of the realms of Akanishtha, in order to make the work of benefiting sentient beings even greater. Therefore, the Joyful One of the Bodhisattvas is the first generation of mind, and the Cloud of Dharma is the tenth generation of mind. This Bodhisattva, the son of the Buddhas, who generates the first mind, in what way, in order to liberate beings, becomes the master of unconditioned compassion, and by the aspiration of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra's aspiration, is greatly (43a) dedicated to the joy of dwelling, this is called the first generation of mind, which symbolizes the fruit of the cause of non-dual wisdom. That Bodhisattva's aspiration is: Whatever differences there are in the aspirations of the Buddhas who have gone to the three times, from the practice of Bodhi to the attainment of Buddhahood, all of these I will fulfill completely. Like these ten great aspirations, hundreds of thousands of aspirations are planted on the first ground. The Bodhisattva of the stage of faith is not a Bodhisattva who has generated the first mind, because it is similar to not entering the fruit of the Hearer's determination. The Sutra says: The nature of practicing with great faith immediately obtains and abides in the first ground, this is the ground where the mind of Bodhi has not arisen. And, considering the practitioner of faith, it says there: Son of good family, for example, a wheel-turning king has surpassed the color of humans, but has not obtained the color of gods. Similarly, a Bodhisattva has also completely surpassed all the grounds of worldly beings, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas, but has not obtained the ground of a true Bodhisattva. Secondly, there are two: the explanation of the qualities of special characteristics, and the perfection of the main giving. The first has two: the merit of obtaining a special name, and the merit of obtaining a special meaning. The first is: From then on, he is called by the very name of Bodhisattva because he has obtained it. From the time of entering the Joyful Land, that prince is Bodhi
