Moreover, afflictive views of the transitory and ignorance, which arise from the Madhyamaka system, cannot be abandoned by meditating on the aspects of truth as explained in the Abhidharma. Rather, they must be abandoned by meditating on the absence of inherent existence of phenomena as explained in the Madhyamaka. (48b) Therefore, one must understand the difference between the coarse and subtle views of self of persons, which are to be abandoned. To say this is an unsurpassed error, because in all three vehicles, in the three kinds of afflictions to be abandoned on the paths of seeing and meditation, there is not a single letter in the Abhidharma or Prajnaparamita scriptures that indicates that there are coarse and subtle afflictions to be abandoned. Moreover, if one directly realizes the coarse absence of self of persons, one becomes an Arya. But you do not accept that realizing the coarse absence of self is being an Arya. Even ordinary beings have inferential realization, so it does not directly abandon the afflictive view of the transitory. In response to this, one might think that by viewing the aggregates as impermanent, etc., one can reverse the grasping at a self that is permanent, single, and independent, etc., and therefore all afflictions will be abandoned. But this is not possible, because realizing that there is no self that is permanent, single, etc., different from the aggregates, does not reasonably reverse the grasping at a self and afflictions that are imputed on the aggregates. Moreover, the self that is permanent, single, etc., is not the basis of the coemergent grasping at self, and even those who do not have such a grasping at self are seen to have grasping at self and afflictions. As the scripture says, in the Ratnavali: As long as there is grasping at the aggregates, there is grasping at self. As long as there is grasping at self, there is karma. From karma, there is again rebirth. The three paths have no beginning, end, or middle. The wheel of samsara is like a wheel of fire. Like a wheel of fire, this, which is the cause of each other, becomes samsara. This (49a) is not seen by either oneself or others, in any of the three times. Therefore, grasping at self will be exhausted. After that, karma and birth will also be exhausted. Thus, it is taught that samsara advances and retreats according to whether or not there is clinging to phenomena such as the aggregates. Also, as the Ratnavali says: Just as the eye, through delusion, grasps at a wheel of fire, so too do the senses grasp at present objects. The senses and their objects are considered to be the nature of the five elements. Since the elements are individually meaningless, this

They are all meaningless. If the elements are separate and distinct, like fire without fuel, they turn to ashes. If they are combined, they become without characteristics, and the same is true for the rest. Thus, since the elements are meaningless in both ways, combination is meaningless. Since combination itself is meaningless, form is also truly meaningless. Consciousness, feeling, perception, and formations, at all times, are meaningless in their individual essence, and therefore meaningless in the ultimate sense. Just as one becomes arrogant with happiness when treating suffering, similarly, one becomes arrogant with suffering when happiness is destroyed. Therefore, since it is devoid of inherent nature, abandon the craving for encountering pleasure and the craving for separation from suffering. Therefore, liberation comes from seeing it in this way. If asked, by what does one see? It is referred to as mind in conventional terms. Without mental factors, there is no mind, and since it is meaningless, it is not desired to exist. Thus, having truly and correctly understood that beings are meaningless, like a fire without cause, one passes into nirvana without a place and without taking. It is taught that if one does not understand that phenomena such as the aggregates are without inherent nature, one will not attain nirvana. If you think that this sutra was spoken in the context of non-abiding nirvana, it is not so. Because the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who realize that phenomena are without inherent nature manifest the nirvana of cessation, but the Bodhisattvas who realize in this way are not like that. Therefore, at the end of that sutra, it says: "Thus, even Bodhisattvas, having seen this, definitely desire enlightenment. However, they connect to existence until enlightenment with compassion." It is said. In particular, for the sake of abandoning the afflictive obscurations for the Shravakas, it is also taught in the Shravaka sutras that all formations are without inherent nature, as it says: "Form is like a mass of foam, feeling is like a bubble in water, perception is like a mirage, formations are like a plantain tree, consciousness is like an illusion. Thus spoke the Kinsman of the Sun." Therefore, for the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, in the first turning of the wheel, impermanence is taught because phenomena are destroyed and exhausted, and emptiness is taught because even the impermanent phenomena themselves are not permanent in that state, because they cease and do not become established as phenomena. When it is taught, those Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who have the potential to actually generate realization on that basis...
