Because there are no other extremes not included here. Actually, there are two, and implicitly, there are also those two. The three aggregates and the three aggregates that are not two. If you are separated from these four extremes, there will be no remainder of clinging to extremes. Therefore, you actually make the other-empty ultimate truth into an unconditioned permanent dharma. Because of this, since permanence is unconditioned, the three actions of agent, object, and action, which originate from the ultimate truth, will be cut off. If that is cut off, then liberation, which originates from the realization of the ultimate truth, will be cut off. If that is cut off, then the dharma of samsara will also be cut off, because it is believed that samsara, the conventional truth, arises in a reversed way from being mistaken about the ultimate nirvana. The ultimate nirvana must acknowledge the distinction of being impossible to exist. If there is no nirvana, then samsara, which depends on it, will also not exist, so there is no choice but to acknowledge annihilation. What will become of that (page 12a)? Is it not unreasonable that in all the Madhyamaka doctrines of sutra and tantra, the imputations and deprecations of permanence and annihilation are uprooted, and it is explained that one enters into the meaning of Madhyamaka? In reality, you have acknowledged that the unconditioned permanence of the ultimate truth is the supreme Madhyamaka tenet. Because of acknowledging this, it necessarily follows that you must also acknowledge the unconditioned annihilation of the ultimate truth. The sign is made by the completely perfected Buddha. If you think so, then all the sutras and tantras of Madhyamaka, which speak of the extremes of permanence and annihilation, will become either meaningless or have an interpretable meaning. If it is like the first case, then those sutras will not be the words of the completely perfected Buddha. If you think like the second case, then the prohibition of the extremes of permanence and annihilation is necessary for the conventional truth, but not necessary for the ultimate truth. If you think so, then because of that thought, the completely perfected Buddha would consider the part with permanence and annihilation to be the ultimate truth, and the part without it to be the conventional truth. If that is the case, then the teacher Buddha will not become a fearless oath-taker, because in his definitive sutras, it is said that the ultimate truth is that which is separated from all extremes of permanence and annihilation, and the teacher establishes the separation from the extremes of permanence and annihilation as the conventional truth, and the two extremes of permanence and annihilation are not even allowed to be a reversed conventionality, and should be known.
