So, would all these faults become unreasonable? The answer is: For those who claim to make inferences for themselves based on the presence of the property in the subject and pervasion, which are established by commonly accepted valid cognition, there will be the fault of the basis and reason not being established by commonly accepted valid cognition. We, the consequentialists, do not apply inferences established only by our own system's valid cognition, nor do we apply inferences for ourselves that are established by other systems and commonly accepted valid cognition, even in dreams. Because the inferences we speak of are merely those that have the result of refuting the commitments of others, that cut off false imputations in the minds of others, they are consequentialist arguments. For the Madhyamikas themselves, because expressing such words (124b) is free from all elaboration of wanting to express anything that is knowable or a means of knowing. So, how does one express a consequentialist inference that refutes others? For example, some Shravaka schools think that "the eye sees other things," and they also think that the eye does not see its own nature. At that time, the opponent accepts the property of the subject. If the dharma of seeing other things, such as blue, does not see itself, then seeing other things will not arise, and this is also accepted by example on a pot. At that time, the pervasion is accepted. In this way, after expressing the three modes of acceptance, the consequentialist inference that refutes one's own commitment is that, because of that reason, whatever does not see its own nature, does not have the seeing of other things, like a pot. The eye also has the non-seeing of its own nature, therefore, it also does not have the seeing of other things. Therefore, the seeing of other things, such as blue, which contradicts the non-seeing of its own nature, contradicts the inference that is established in himself with the property of the subject and pervasion. Thus, for the Vaibhashikas, the inference that is established eliminates his wrong conceptions. Therefore, because of what dissimilar faults should these inferences only need to express the refutation of other's positions? What similar faults would our statements have? For us consequentialists, where is there an opportunity to enter the fault of the basis and reason not being established by commonly accepted valid cognition, as was just said? Also, the debating opponent

Through the means of inference established in any one of the opponents (125a), then, is there harm from inference? Yes, there is. That is because the reason itself, established by the opponent's own admission, causes harm, but not by being established in another opponent. For that is how it is seen in the world. For example, in the world, when betting, sometimes if the witness is considered reliable by both the opponent and the counter-opponent, one will lose if one does not contradict the witness's words. Sometimes, one loses simply by saying that one's own words are not true. If one speaks the truth without contradiction, and another says that your words do not conform to that meaning, or conversely, that they are contradictory, then the first speaker will not win or lose because of that. If it is like that in the world, then is it not like that in the case of reason? It is the same in speaking of reason as it is in the world. Because only speaking in accordance with the way the world people use the terms "reason" and "unreason" conforms to the situation of treatises on reason, it is approximate. Otherwise, in the face of transcending the world and being free from the proliferation of terms, where can one establish the rationality and irrationality of reason and unreason? The consequentialists refute the views of others with reasons accepted by others, or establish views that others do not accept, so the great teacher Buddhapālita thought, but the teacher Vasubandhu was not satisfied with this, for that very reason. The teacher Vasubandhu said: Some think that by virtue of being known to others (125b), there is no harm from inference, because one wants to refute what is known to others. That is what he said. In accordance with this, Dignāga said: What is definitely stated to both is either establishing or refuting; it is not speaking of what is established in either one or being hesitant. That is to say, victory or defeat will result from arguing after both the subject and the pervasion have been admitted, but if one opponent admits and the other does not, it will not result in victory or defeat. Thinking that way is just thinking, it is not a statement related to reason. They also (follow) the world (rules).
