The cause of delusion is inverted appearance, like a revolving fire wheel. Because of its non-true nature, all formations are false, being of a deceptive nature, like water in a mirage. Whatever is true also has a deceptive nature, like Nirvana. Therefore, based on this teaching and scripture, all phenomena are established as without inherent existence. As stated in the Prajnaparamita, "All phenomena are empty, in the manner of being without inherent existence." Thus, there are many such explanations, so one should contemplate this meaning well. Some Tibetans, because the proponent believes in inherent existence, refute it with refutations and establish their own position. However, establishing a position that inherent existence does not exist is absolutely not permissible. If so, the proponent would become a Svatantrika. Such words, if dependent on oneself, are like a limbless person discussing affairs, so one should be cautious. The skillful one contemplates thus, in the commentary on the sixth chapter of the Madhyamakavatara, the Prajnapradipa, it is said: "If the words of Nagarjuna appear as direct refutations, they are actually words of meaning. Because their meaning is profound, they are actually the cause of many Svatantrika arguments." Thus it is recorded. If one contemplates thus, then why not consider the words of Buddhapalita as many refutations and affirmations? However, although affirmations and so on are not established in the root text, the words that extensively describe the arguments are the custom of the commentators. However, this is not definitive either, because Nagarjuna, who composed the Vigrahavyavartani, also did not speak of Svatantrika arguments. The words of the omniscient Yeshe Tsewa: "When Buddhapalita refutes self-origination, he did not directly make a Svatantrika argument, therefore it is a place of reproach." The skillful one said thus. However, Chandrakirti said, "Although Buddhapalita did not directly say it, by the force of the words of meaning, he extensively spoke of Svatantrika arguments, so it is not a place of reproach. Moreover, Chandrakirti extensively spoke of Svatantrika arguments in this commentary on the root text.
