Although not established by valid cognition, the consequentialist system is that of establishing refutation and establishment based on the fact that the three characteristics of sign, property, and example are established as a common appearance to both the opponent and the proponent by means of conventional valid cognition. It seems that this is how it is explained. Those two brothers are also unanimously established as upholders of the doctrine who have realized the intention of glorious Tsongkhapa. However, even so, if the meaning of consequentialism and autonomy is explained in this way, then the great teachers of consequentialism and autonomy would not even dream of such a view, yet to say that they hold such a view is to fabricate and assert it. The great teachers of consequentialism do not hold that the three characteristics of sign, property, and example, which are established as a common appearance to both the opponent and the proponent, are established by valid cognition in the two truths (95a). This is because they are not established by the valid cognition of the wisdom that measures ultimate truth, nor by the valid cognition of the meditative equipoise of the noble ones. As for the valid cognition that measures convention, the consequentialists say that it is not established as valid cognition in either of the two truths. The first sign is established, for if it were established by it, then the three characteristics of sign, property, and example would become ultimately true. You have already accepted the pervasion of the sign. It is not permissible to assert this. The second is established, for although the consequentialists assert that dependent arising, such as the three characteristics of sign, property, and example, are worldly conventional phenomena in the eyes of the world, without desiring self-nature, you say that those conventional entities are established as functional by conventional valid cognition, which is not only not accepted in ultimate truth, but also not in conventional truth. As it is said: As you desire dependent arising as a real entity, I have not accepted conventional truth either. Although these do not exist for the sake of results, I say that they exist in the eyes of the world. As you abide in independence, and by your own system, the nature of another's power should be comprehended by the wisdom of the noble ones, thus they are not conventional truth. What then? Although it does not exist, I say that what is known only in the world exists, and it is said only in the face of the world, for the subsequent statement is a means of reversing it. As it is said: The Blessed One said: The world argues with me, but I do not argue with the world, whatever the world (95b)

I also consider that thing to exist. Whatever is considered not to exist in the world, I also consider not to exist. Because there is such a saying. Neither the Prasangikas nor the realists can possibly admit that worldly conventional realities are established by nominal valid cognition, because the Prasangikas have never established that the nature of worldly convention exists in their own system. If that is not established, how can the distinctions of reality, the three aspects of subject, property, and reason, be established by nominal valid cognition? Therefore, the Teacher said that in his own system, he prevents worldly conventional realities from being established by any valid cognition, whether it be nominal conceptual thought or the wisdom of the noble ones' individual self-awareness, and the world is frightened and argues with the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said: I have truly realized its mode of existence in the two truths, and that is why I say so. You have not realized its mode of existence in the two truths, but rather hold it in a reversed way, and rely on terms such as existence and non-existence to accept and reject, and I will also follow your ideas and speak accordingly. Therefore, these worldly conventional realities are not said to be established in the conventional by the Prasangikas' own system through conventional nominal valid cognition, because just as in the conventional, the aggregates of the remainderless nirvana are not established by nominal valid cognition alone. As it is said: How, having abandoned the aggregates, to enter into peace, Arhats do not possess, likewise the world does not have, likewise this, I do not say is more than the world. (96a) How Arhats enter the realm of remainderless nirvana, they do not possess all conventions, likewise if worldly people do not possess them, then just like the aggregates of Arhats, I do not say that these exist relative to the world. Therefore, I acknowledge the conventional from the perspective of relying on others, but not autonomously. So it is said. Furthermore, although the Prasangikas do not establish the three aspects of subject, property, and reason, etc., of worldly conventional realities in their own system as being established by nominal valid cognition, when making these terms, the other's designation of worldly people
