However, it is not so, therefore this is not existent. This imputation of dependent origination is also extensively explained in the Madhyamakavatara, and should be thoroughly sought from there. Thus it is said. Therefore, the Consequentialist refutes the five non-Buddhist philosophers and the internal Tirthikas, who slander the two truths by speaking of the four extremes of birth, etc., and of permanence and annihilation, etc., by taking as the basis for refutation and establishment the innate mind of the speaker, what is known as a valid cognition in the tenets, and what is merely imputed as a valid cognition by the force of acceptance, and destroys their evil poison of wrong conceptions, like an executioner causing his own life to be cut off by himself. When refuting and establishing based on such reasoning, the Consequentialist, for the sake of the opponent, merely in accordance with the common parlance of others, applies consequences that may or may not produce proof, and after establishing the proof statements of those consequential meanings, and the respective reasons, establishes subsequent inferential statements, and although there is stating the thesis and then establishing the reason, at that time the Consequentialist does not become an Autonomy proponent, because if he speaks only as a Madhyamika, he does not accept the proof (88a) established by his own system's valid cognition in both truths, and the object to be proven along with its properties. Since he does not accept those, he can arrange words in any way to refute the other's wrong conceptions, because the attachment to the connection of the sign, property, etc., also remains only on the side of the other. For his own side, all contradictory connections of refutation and establishment are destroyed like a mirage dissolving in the sky. Therefore, verbal expression follows the wishes of the person, but it is not like the iron hook of an elephant that drives it against its will. Therefore, in the Clear Words it says: Things do not arise from themselves, because for what exists in its own nature, arising is also meaningless. Just as a pot at the time of making pottery, it does not need to arise because it already exists as a manifest pot. What is said is also that the Consequentialist, for the Samkhyas, establishes it as the language of autonomy to generate subsequent inference known to others, because if it were a consequence, the consequence without acceptance would become a joke. By combining such language of autonomy, one's own

It is not the case that what is to be established is established by the measure of the continuum or one's own system. Because the reasoning of the Madhyamikas themselves is based on the impartiality established by self-awareness that is established by measure, all the words of debate are spoken only to refute others. In such refutations, there are two types: speaking excessively and speaking truthfully, because the words at that time appear to be the latter. So, since one has not established one's own system or one's own side even slightly, it is not necessary to refute only others, because refuting others has no meaning of establishment, it is only a matter of fault-finding. This is not established, it is not said for the sake of fault-finding with others, but whoever has a mind that abides in a certain side is mistaken about that very reality, and whatever side that is, it is refuted in his presence by a reasonable reasoning that is known to others, so that the one who is free from the mind that abides in a side is placed in the understanding of that very reality. Therefore, if one is a Madhyamika, one should not measure by the subsequent inference of one's own continuum. Regarding this, many previous and later Tibetan scholars did not understand this profound point that I have spoken of, and when they tame disciples and take in followers by means of refutation and establishment in the way that Madhyamikas seek it, they only establish the consequence that does not project the establisher and the statement of establishment that is synonymous with the consequence, because other than that, they do not establish a position that others do not accept for others, and establish its establisher, because if they establish it in that way, it will become a Svātantrika. Saying this is because they have not read even once the vast treatises of Śāntideva and Candrakīrti, and are satisfied with turning over some introductory texts and some rough outlines, and like cattle, they gather together in large numbers and utter bad sounds, saying that they are doing Madhyamika teaching, debate, and composition, which is entirely due to ignorance, and there is no choice but to utter it, appearing like a clear mirror. In the Clear Words, it says, "This logician to the teacher Kamalaśīla," not because that teacher was extremely proficient in the great systems of sound and measure, etc., both internal and external, and had profound and sharp wisdom, but because of the conventional.
