Thus it is said. And again, it says there: Existence and non-existence are to be understood by the mind, Because of the prohibition, likewise the wise ones, The non-discriminating wisdom, arises in the manner of non-arising. Thus it is said. Moreover, not only is the Buddha without discrimination, but it is also said that he is devoid of the proliferation that causes non-discriminating wisdom, as it is said: The non-discriminating object of meaning, All minds also generate non-discrimination, Because of the nature of selflessness and so on, For example, like minds with discrimination. Because all knowable things are not established, For whom there is no non-discriminating, Mind that also does not arise, That very one is said to be known by the unequaled one. Therefore, to realize that (83b), For whom, The mind that does not arise is the actual Buddha. Discrimination itself is for the Buddha, Non-discrimination is for the increase. Thus, and so on, it occurs extensively in the system of the Svatantrika school. Even so, when seeking that very thing by relying on the establishment of the vast proliferation of phenomena, the conventional truth, the Prasangika and Svatantrika schools have different views on how to establish conventional phenomena as terms by relying on the conventional. That is, all of us who enjoy the phenomena with characteristics, because these phenomena are functional, they are established as real and self-existent. Not only that, but also the innate clings to it, and the imputed also clings to it. Now, does the functional one who sees it as real from the functional, function by the power of the thing itself abiding in its own nature, or does it appear to function by being labeled even though the thing itself does not abide in its own nature? Those who speak of reality say that the thing itself functions by the power of abiding in its own nature. Thus, because it is functional, the thing is also self-existent, and that is the ultimate truth. Because the functioning itself also abides by the power of its own self-existence, there is no deception in it, so whatever phenomenon is true by the power of the thing abiding, that is truly established as the ultimate truth. A phenomenon that is not in accordance with the appearance of the mind that grasps reality from beginningless time is not established in meaning, so it is unreal and false. For example, the Mind-Only school believes that because it is false, it is separated from the apprehended and apprehender of the sense consciousness looking outward, and only the inward-looking awareness, the mere reality of awareness (84a), that very thing abides in the power of its own self-existence.

Moreover, that which is self-manifesting and capable of cognitive function also arises through the power of things themselves. That which, having functioned in that way, becomes a thing is said to be the ultimately true, truly established. Such a valid cognition is a valid cognition of the ultimate truth, meaning that the previous illusion of dualistic appearance, later without realizing that it has separated from it, becomes a clarifier of the object, just like a reversed conception. Both the consequentialist and autonomist Madhyamikas agree that a thing that has become the ultimate truth functions by the power of itself, and that the valid cognition that establishes that function does not exist in either of the two truths. They believe that in the knowable there is no thing that has become the ultimate truth and is capable of functioning. Even so, the autonomist believes that a conventional thing is capable of functioning by the power of itself, and that the valid cognition that establishes that function, although it does not exist in the ultimate, can be established in the conventional truth. Therefore, a conventional, illusory-like thing is capable of functioning by the power of itself, and the valid cognition that establishes that function is there. Whatever conventional thing is established is established from the point of view of being able to function or holding its own characteristics. Moreover, its function and the dharma that holds its own characteristics also depend on the causes and conditions that cause the function and hold the characteristics by the power of the thing that establishes itself. In the Blaze of Reasoning, it says: Without the ladder of true conventionalities, to go to the top of the true house is not suitable for the wise. The palace mentioned here refers to the palace of liberation, which is conspicuously superior to the places of the three realms, built by countless skillful artisans, adorned with extremely high pillars of the limbs of enlightenment, painted with the white ash of infinite virtuous dharmas, illuminated by the light of the Sugata's moon-like face, completely clearing away all dimness, and is the abode of the omniscient. To ascend to that palace, without practicing the ladder of the true conventional truth, that is, the perfections practiced in countless seven eons, and the complete ten powers and five superknowledges, one can only be capable of futility.
