Furthermore, one should respectfully honor the complete Bodhisattvas, because no one other than a Bodhisattva can explain dependent origination. The second is: The wise who are skilled in the profound and vast principles will gradually attain the Joyful Ground. Therefore, in order to pursue this ground, please listen to this path. Accumulating merit without interruption, the wise who are skilled in the profoundness of emptiness and the vastness of generosity, etc., will gradually attain the Joyful Ground by traversing the paths of accumulation and preparation. In order to pursue the Joyful Ground, please listen to this path that will be explained. Third, from the perspective of the two selflessnesses (69a) explaining, and from the perspective of the sixteen emptinesses explaining. First, explaining the two selflessnesses separately, and summarizing the meaning. First, the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons. Explaining the selflessness of phenomena. First, from the two aspects of scripture and reasoning, the first is: Regarding how to show the reality of all phenomena, first is the scripture. In the "Noble Ten Grounds Sutra" it says: "Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, the Bodhisattva who has perfected the path on the fifth Bodhisattva ground enters the sixth Bodhisattva ground. He enters through ten equalities of phenomena. What are the ten? They are: all phenomena are equal in being without characteristics, all phenomena are equal in being without self-nature, similarly, without arising, unarisen, peaceful, primordially pure, without elaboration, without acceptance or rejection, all phenomena are equal like illusions, dreams, mirages, Gandharva cities, moons in water, reflections, and emanations, all phenomena are equal in being non-dual in terms of existence and non-existence. When one thoroughly understands the nature of all phenomena in this way, one attains the sixth Bodhisattva ground, which is manifested through keen and compliant forbearance." As it is said. Here, there is a reason for showing the selflessness of phenomena first: because the Bodhisattva on the sixth ground arises from seeing the suchness of dependent origination, and in order to pursue the Joyful Ground (69b) please listen to this path, which is from the perspective of the noble ones, and the phenomena of

Similarly, if one realizes suchness, then one also understands that the mistaken basis of the ego-clinging of individuals is without inherent existence, thereby eliminating the two obscurations, and therefore it is mentioned as primary. If that is the case, then merely teaching the absence of self in phenomena accomplishes the purpose, so is teaching the absence of self in individuals meaningless? It is not, because it allows dull individuals to gradually enter the teachings, and because it shows the entrance to the liberation of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Secondly, (there are) three (topics): extensively refuting the four extremes of arising, showing conventional arising as dependent origination, and explaining the necessity of analyzing with reasoning. In the first (topic), there are: actually refuting the four extremes of arising, and dispelling contradictions in the refutation. In the first (topic), there are: restating the pledge of non-arising, extensively explaining the reasoning for refuting the four extremes of arising, and for that very reason, showing that all phenomena are without inherent existence. The first is: "That itself does not arise from that, how could it arise from others? It does not arise from both, how could it exist without a cause?" Among the ten equalities, the first eight verses of scripture are equality in the ultimate sense, the ninth, which is shown by seven examples such as illusion, is equality in the conventional sense, and the last explains equality in both truths, so from the perspective of showing equality in non-arising through reasoning, the other equalities are easy to show. Therefore, the teacher (Nāgārjuna) says at the beginning of the Treatise on the Middle Way: "Not from itself, not from another, not from both, not without a cause, whatever things, wherever, arising never exists." The meaning of this brief statement is: whatever internal and external things that depend on themselves, wherever the object of dependence, time, or established tenet may be, arising never exists, that is, in any way at all. Likewise, apply it to the other three as well. The word "not" should be connected with "not from itself" and so on, but it should not be connected with the existence of arising from itself, and "not," because by negating the cause, the negation of the effect is accomplished by implication. This text is explained by teachers such as Kamalaśīla by applying the reasoning of the Vajra Splinters. As it says in the Light on the Middle Way: "Thus, those that are truly devoid of arising from themselves, others, or both, and arising without a cause in the ultimate sense, those are truly without inherent existence."
