Moreover, anger arises especially easily to cut off the patience of that bodhisattva (60n), because the bodhisattva focuses especially on the suffering of those who commit evil deeds. When abiding in this ground (referring to the ground of patience), holding to extremes in this way, it is said that they will not be angry. When abiding in this ground, how could ordinary people have an object of anger? The second is: For the Bodhisattva who sees selflessness, what is cut by what, when, and how? Because the Dharma is also seen by him like a reflection, therefore he also endures because of that. Like this, not only enduring, but for the Bodhisattva who sees all dharmas as selfless, what flesh and bones can be cut? By what cutter is it cut? At what time, with weapons etc., however it is cut, that Bodhisattva will endure, because all the dharmas of the three spheres are seen by that Bodhisattva as being without self-nature, separate from self and what belongs to self, therefore like a reflection. Moreover, the word "also" includes the previous cause of patience. Secondly, (explaining) the faults of anger, the benefits of patience, therefore advising to abandon anger and cultivate patience. First, (explaining) that it is meaningless in this life, contradictory to the next life, and also explaining other faults of this life and the next life. The first is: If one is angry at someone for harming them, does being angry at them reverse the harm that has already been done? Therefore, being angry at them is certainly meaningless in this life, and it will also contradict the next life. Patience is not only something that bodhisattvas should practice, but it is also a cause for protecting the virtues of others, and anger should be avoided. If someone harms me, if I am angry at the one who harmed me, then being angry and being angry at the one who harmed me is certainly meaningless in this life as well. Now, does my anger at him reverse the harm that has already been done to my body, such as wounds? It cannot be reversed, therefore. The Bodhicaryāvatāra says: If it can be remedied, what is there to be unhappy about? If it cannot be remedied, what good does it do to be unhappy? It is said like this. Not only that, but if one is angry at him, it will also contradict the achievement of happiness in the next life, because arising anger will cause one to be reborn into an unpleasant result. Secondly, (explaining) the unpleasant result.

It is said that abandoning arrogance and becoming the cause of exhausting the merits accumulated for a long time. First, whatever is the result of the non-virtuous deeds done in the past, it is that very thing that one wants to say will exhaust it. Because of harming others and suffering from anger, how does it lead as a seed? One's own past misdeeds, when enjoying the fruits here, with a foolish mind thinking that others are causing harm, presuming to be able to defeat the harm of others, this should be avoided. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "I have done such harm to sentient beings in the past, therefore it is reasonable for sentient beings to harm me." Therefore, one should be patient with the enemy who throws sharp weapons, because the result of one's own past non-virtuous deeds matures in the lower realms, and enduring the ripening of the corresponding result here, one wants to say that the karmic result will be exhausted. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Relying on these as companions, patience reduces my many sins." If one does not cultivate patience towards the harmer, but instead retaliates with harm, then one will be led to the lower realms by the very seed of harm. Now, cultivating patience towards the harmer is like what? It is like the suffering of taking medicine to cure a disease, which causes even greater suffering than what has already passed. Because the harmer (61a) causes suffering to oneself by harming others and with anger. In short, one should cultivate patience towards the suffering that eliminates sins, just as a patient should endure the cutting surgery performed by a doctor to cure the disease. Second, because anger towards the bodhisattvas destroys in an instant the merit arising from generosity and discipline, accumulated over hundreds of thousands of kalpas, therefore, there is no sin greater than impatience. Impatience not only produces the suffering of the ripening result, but also exhausts the long-accumulated roots of virtue. Because bodhisattvas, whether knowing or not knowing that they are bodhisattvas, driven by afflictions, falsely accusing them with true or false faults and becoming angry, even for a moment's thought, the generosity and discipline that arise
