Whatever is 'suchness' itself, I have shown to be completely purified, and equality is suchness. And so on, extensively. When explaining the meaning of this scripture, in the holy land (India) it is said that if one does not understand the meaning of equality, one cannot even attain mere nirvana. And two views arose: one cannot attain non-abiding nirvana. Some Tibetans who appeared in the degenerate age of the five hundred years think that ignorance and the view of the aggregates, etc., arising from the upper and lower Abhidharma, and the true aspects arising from those views, can be abandoned by meditation. If that is the case, then the view of the aggregates and ignorance, etc., arising from the Madhyamaka school, cannot be abandoned by meditating on the true aspects spoken of in the Abhidharma, but must be abandoned by meditating on the (48b) selflessness of phenomena spoken of in the Madhyamaka school. Therefore, one must know the difference between abandoning the gross view of self of a person and abandoning the subtle view of self of a person. To say this is an unsurpassed mistake. Because in all the three vehicles, in the three kinds of afflictions to be abandoned on the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, there is not a single word in the different scriptures of the Abhidharma and the Prajnaparamita that shows that the afflictions to be abandoned have gross and subtle aspects. And if one directly realizes the gross selflessness of a person, one will become a noble being. But you do not admit that realizing the gross selflessness of a person is being a noble being. And even ordinary beings can realize the gross selflessness of a person through inference. Therefore, this does not directly abandon the view of the aggregates. To this, someone might think: by observing the aggregates as impermanent, etc., one can reverse the clinging to a self that is permanent, single, and independent, etc., and thus abandon all afflictions. But this is not possible. Because merely by realizing that a self that is permanent, single, etc., is different from the aggregates, one cannot reverse the (erroneous) clinging to a self that has the aggregates as its basis and the afflictions. And the self that is permanent, single, etc., is not the basis of the innate clinging to self. Moreover, even for those who do not have such clinging to self, one can see that there is clinging to self and afflictions. As the scripture says: As the Ratnavali says: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self. As long as there is clinging to self, there is karma. From karma, there is again rebirth. The three paths have no beginning, no end, and no middle. The wheel of samsara is like a fire wheel. Like a fire wheel, they have cause and effect relationships with each other. This is samsara. This is (49a) oneself and others, and

Since it is not seen in the three times, the clinging to self will be exhausted, and then karma and birth will also be exhausted. Thus it is said, which shows that samsara advances and retreats according to whether there is attachment to the objects of the aggregates, etc. Also, as it says in the Ratnavali: Just as the eye, through delusion, grasps a wheel of firebrands, so do the senses grasp present objects. The senses and their objects are considered to be the nature of the five elements. Since each element is meaningless, these are also meaningless in meaning. If the elements are separate, it would be like fire without fuel. If they are combined, they would lose their characteristics, and the same should be determined for the remainder. Thus, the elements are meaningless in both ways, so combination is also meaningless. Since combination itself is meaningless, form is also meaningless in meaning. Consciousness, feeling, perception, and formations, in all cases, their individual nature is meaningless, so they are also meaningless in the ultimate sense. Just as one is proud of happiness when treating suffering, so too one is proud of suffering when happiness is destroyed. Therefore, since there is no inherent nature, one should abandon the craving for encountering happiness and the craving for separation from suffering. Therefore, one is liberated by seeing in this way. If one asks, "Who will see?" the answer is, "In conventional terms, it is called mind." Without mental factors, there is no mind, and since it is meaningless, it is not desired to exist. Thus, knowing that beings are meaningless as they truly are, like a fire without cause, one passes into nirvana without a place to go and without taking anything. Thus it is said, if one does not know that the aggregates, etc., are without inherent nature, one will not attain nirvana. If one thinks that this scripture is spoken in terms of non-abiding nirvana, that is not correct. Because the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who realize that phenomena are without inherent nature manifest the nirvana of cessation, but the Bodhisattva Aryas who realize in this way are not like that. Therefore, at the end of this scripture, it says: Thus, even a Bodhisattva, having seen this, will definitely desire enlightenment. However, with compassion, he connects to existence until enlightenment. In particular, in order for the Shravakas to abandon the afflictive obscurations, it is also taught in the Shravaka sutras that all conditioned phenomena are without inherent nature, such as form is emptiness.
