And then it became like this. After that, towards all sentient and non-sentient things other than the object of self-grasping, the thought arises, "This is mine," thereby generating attachment to things. Therefore, these people who are attached to self and what belongs to self, like the rope of a water bucket, wander helplessly due to the control of karma and afflictions, from the Avici hell to the peak of existence, in the great well of samsara, from beginningless time without interruption. That is also like the rope of a water bucket being bound by a rope, (41b) depending on the control of the winch maker, rotating in the well, going down naturally, and having to be pulled up with effort, the order of the water's beginning, middle, and end cannot be determined, and it wears down day by day. These beings are tightly bound by karma and afflictions, depending on the control of consciousness, wandering from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, naturally falling into the lower realms, and having to strive upwards to reach the realms of gods and humans, the order of the beginning, middle, and end of the dependent origination of afflictions, karma, and the afflictions of birth cannot be determined, and they are defiled by the three sufferings day by day, this is the metaphor for the samsara of beings. To such suffering beings, with the intention of saving them with compassion, first is the Bodhisattva, the Bhagavan Great Compassionate One who has no enemy of hatred towards sentient beings, I prostrate to him. This is praise to both compassion and the Bodhisattva who possesses it. The second is: Beings are like the moon in moving water, seeing the movement and emptiness of nature itself. For example, when the water is very clear and is moved by the force of a not-strong wind, the image of the moon appears, appearing like the actual moon together with the basis of appearance, an old person knows that the image of the moon, and the object of its focus, the water, are impermanent in every moment, and that the moon is empty in nature, this is the metaphor. Again, applying the metaphor to the meaning, in the ocean of the view of the aggregates, in the vast blue water of ignorance, stirred by the wind of improper thought, (42a) the basis within is beings, that is, sentient beings or individuals, is the image of the moon born from the dependent origination of past karma.

When it appears in front like this, bodhisattvas who possess great compassion, seeing the beings who appear in front, relying on karma and afflictions, are tormented by impermanence moment by moment. When they see such dharmas as being empty in their very nature, they can destroy the suffering of agitation, or possess the cause of the nectar of dharma, free from all inverted thoughts. They desire to attain the state of Buddhahood, the sole friend of all beings. To such a Bhagavan, I prostrate to that one who is the embodiment of great compassion. The first stage of generating the mind of enlightenment is the Joyful Ground. The nature of the treatise to be composed is extensively explained, divided into two: an explanation of the cause, the Bodhisattva Grounds, and the result, the Buddha Grounds. The former is further divided into two: the actual explanation of the ten grounds and the explanation of their qualities. The first is further divided into the explanation of the ten grounds: the Joyful Ground, the Stainless Ground, the Luminous Ground, the Radiant Ground, the Difficult to Conquer Ground, the Manifest Ground, the Far-Reaching Ground, the Immovable Ground, the Ground of Good Intelligence, and the Ground of the Cloud of Dharma. The first is further divided into three: a brief explanation of the essence of the ground as the basis of distinction, an extensive explanation of the qualities of the ground as the distinguishing characteristics, and a conclusion through the expression of the qualities of the ground. The first is: The mind of the sons of the Victorious Ones, for the sake of liberating all beings, Held by the power of great compassion, dedicated with the aspirations of Samantabhadra, Abiding in the joy of the first ground, is called the first Joyful Ground. The stainless wisdom of the Bodhisattvas, held by means such as compassion, is called a ground, because it is the basis or place of qualities. Just as in the world, the earth is known as a place of support. The nature of the grounds is not different, because they are undifferentiated in the stainless wisdom that realizes emptiness. As it is said: Like the traces of birds in the sky, the wise cannot speak of nor see, Likewise, all the grounds of the sons of the Victorious Ones, cannot be spoken of, how much less can they be heard. Thus, the difference between the grounds is distinguished by the difference in the increasing number of qualities that depend on that ground, and the power of miraculous abilities, etc., the practice of the six perfections such as giving, and the manner of taking birth, etc., due to the increase of the ripening. The ripening is the stainless body, etc., of that ground when the ground is attained.
