In short, because love is the seed of the perfect crop of the Buddhas, like water for growth, and like ripening in a place of long-term enjoyment, therefore I will first praise compassion. Among the three factors that cause Bodhicitta to arise, these two factors also arise from the cause of compassion. First, praise compassion itself. For example, a perfect crop needs seeds, water, and ripening at the beginning, middle, and end. To make the unsprouted sprout grow, to make the sprouted sprout grow further, and to make the future fruit exist well through the ripening of the fruit. Apply this example to compassion to praise it. Why praise great compassion? Because love, great compassion itself, is necessary for the perfect crop of the Buddhas in all three times. First, it is like the seed of all the Buddha's teachings, because it causes the sprouts of the two Bodhicittas to grow when they have not yet sprouted. Relying on this, the two Bodhicittas arise in the continuum in a way that one does not arise without the other, and that is its nature. As the Lord Nāgārjuna said: From which Great Vehicle, compassion precedes all actions, and immaculate wisdom is taught, who with a mind would slander it? Therefore, in the middle, it is also necessary, because it is like water that makes the Bodhicitta that has already arisen and the merits of the two accumulations grow further. Even if Bodhicitta has arisen, if it is not repeatedly watered with the water of compassion, those who have not widely accumulated the accumulations for Buddhahood will fall into inferior nirvana. Finally, it is also necessary, because it is considered to be the ripening crop that students (40b), ordinary beings and the assembly of noble ones, enjoy for a long time. Even if one attains the Dharmakāya for one's own benefit, if there is no form body for the benefit of others that is fully matured by compassion, the assembly of students will not enjoy it for a long time. Therefore, the form body for the benefit of others that is fully matured by great compassion is fully relied upon by the students, ordinary beings, and the assembly of noble ones, and thus carries out activities.

So that the lineage will increase for a long time until the end of time. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: Just as one lamp can light a multitude of lamps, although countless numbers arise, it is not exhausted. Similarly, one ripening can produce a multitude of ripenings, although countless numbers arise, it is not exhausted. Thus it appears. Because of the reason just stated, at the beginning of writing this treatise, I, the scholar Chandrakirti, will praise great compassion. Secondly, there are: praising compassion that focuses on sentient beings, and praising compassion that focuses on dharma and the absence of focus. The first is: At first, clinging to the self as "I," and creating attachment to things as "this is mine," like a water bucket, without independence, I bow down to the one who has compassion for beings. Compassion also has three aspects: compassion that focuses on sentient beings, compassion that focuses on dharma, and compassion that has no focus, and there are three reasons: because the mind imputes sentient beings or persons as substantially existent, and focuses on such sentient beings; because the mind realizes that sentient beings are not substantially existent, and focuses only on the aggregates and other dharmas that are imputed as sentient beings; because the mind realizes that both persons and dharmas (41a) are without inherent existence, and focuses on what is imputed as merely sentient beings on what is without inherent existence, because it is thoroughly distinguished by the aspect of wanting to be separated from suffering. In whose continuum do these compassion exist? In the system where Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the selflessness of phenomena, first, there are ordinary beings, second, there are Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and third, there are Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. If it is established from the perspective of philosophical tenets, first, there are non-Buddhists, second, there are Realists, and third, there are Madhyamikas. If it is established from the perspective of the Mahayana boundary, first, there are the accumulations and preparations of the Mahayana, second, there are the seven impure grounds, and third, it is believed that it exists above the three pure grounds. In this system where Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the selflessness of phenomena, these last two compassion are considered to be present in all noble beings, because the nature of the mind is the same, and only the way of focusing on the object is different. This world is clinging to self, first with the thought of I, to the self that does not exist, thinking it is mine, clinging to it as true.
