They are worldly people other than Madhyamikas. So, is a Madhyamika person someone who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination or not? One should not assert either that they are definitely so or that they are definitely not so. This is because Madhyamikas do not assert that knowable things are in accordance with dependent origination in their own system, but in order to tame those to be tamed, they speak of knowable things as both in accordance with and not in accordance with dependent origination out of necessity. So, is someone who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination said to be a Madhyamika or not? Someone who realizes dependent origination as emptiness and speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination only nominally to others is known to others as being both someone who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination and a Madhyamika, because there are several identities on one basis. Even so, someone who realizes dependent origination as emptiness and (396n) speaks of knowable dependent origination as being established by its own nature or own system cannot be reasonably established as knowable things being in accordance with dependent origination and being established by its own nature. There has also not been a Madhyamika who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination and being established nominally by their own system. The teachers Śāntarakṣita and Candrakīrti extensively refuted the great teacher Haribhadra and his followers Avalokiteśvara Vratin and others, and the key point is also here. If this key point is understood, then the dividing line and manner of establishment of the Madhyamika Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika schools will be easily understood without confusion. Otherwise, whatever great volumes some Tibetans who do not understand this point write, piecing together their own limited ideas about the dividing line between the Madhyamika Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika schools and how each of their tenets are established, are just saying things that are meaningless. However, it is not seen in the views of those who establish new Tibetan Madhyamika schools that they make refutations and establishments according to the views of those great teachers. Therefore, if someone who establishes knowable dependent origination as being established by its own nature as emptiness is not a true Madhyamika, then how could someone who does not realize knowable dependent origination as emptiness and does not speak of it be a Madhyamika? Also, in this way

Furthermore, it is doubted: worldly beings who are noble ones should not be Madhyamikas, because they are not noble ones abiding in the equipoise of learners and non-learners. If you think so, we admit that they are not true Madhyamikas, but it cannot be said that they are merely similar. If you think so, it is not pervasive, because worldly beings who are noble ones only establish knowable things as dependent arising and emptiness. Those people pride themselves on having realized the equipoise of learners and non-learners, which is free from elaboration, through direct perception or inferential valid cognition, and they transfer all investigations to others. They do not hold on to any position in their own system regarding all elaborations such as refutation and establishment. Therefore, they do not elaborate on any extreme of speech, thought, and expression. At that time, since they do not hold on to any position in their own system, at that time, they have not promised to accept the positions of others either. Regarding the Madhyamika's statement that dependent arising is emptiness and free from extremes, the proponents of reality will say: How can you answer the many objections they raise, saying that it is not established by reasoning whether knowable things are in accordance with or not in accordance with dependent arising? The answer is: I do not accept the sign. I only say that the pervasion contradicts you, which is the correct answer, and it destroys the opponent's pride. Moreover, the pervasion is not established for you. If you think, how does it contradict? You pride yourselves on having a valid cognition of establishment that is self-validating, and thereby establishing a valid cognition of establishment that is self-validating. This is not established, because it is establishing the unestablished with the unestablished. In effect, you yourselves have prevented the self-validation of what is to be established. Therefore, no matter how much the proponents of reality argue with the Madhyamika, they are only saying these things (397na). There is nothing else to say, which is the supreme answer of the Prasangikas. The proponents of reality say: Therefore, the wise answer with Prasangika, and apply the four doors of liberation. This is a way of answering that is superior to that. Again, it is doubted in this way: How are these dharmas, which are included in the two truths, as knowable things, in terms of existence and non-existence? Regarding this, the Madhyamika's own system believes that these dharmas, which are included in the two truths, need not be examined. Even when not examining, regarding these dharmas, which are included in the two truths, one cannot say that this, as a knowable thing, is truly existent, and this is non-existent.
