Emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness without abandonment, self-nature emptiness, emptiness of all dharmas, self-characteristic emptiness, emptiness of non-apprehension, emptiness of the nature of non-things. Thus, having explained the sixteen emptinesses with elaboration, Subhuti, furthermore, things are empty of things, non-things are empty of non-things, self-nature is empty of self-nature, other things (319a) are empty of other things. Thus, having abbreviated, it is again explained as four emptinesses. Those twenty emptinesses are considered the path of the Great Vehicle, because they extensively teach the selflessness of phenomena as an antidote to the obscuration of knowledge. If divided extensively, there are sixteen; if abbreviated, there are four; if extremely abbreviated, they are included in the two selflessnesses. Such distinctions are also conventional truths, but if examined, there is not even a little of those emptinesses that is not emptiness. Thus, explaining the distinctions of emptiness is merely designating them according to the minds of the beings to be tamed, like form and so on. In the treatise it says: If there is even a little that is not empty, then there will be a little emptiness. If there is not even a little that is not empty, how can there be emptiness? It also says: One should not say it is empty, one should not say it is not empty, one should not say it is two or not two, it is said for the sake of designation. Secondly, there are two: explaining extensively as sixteen, and abbreviating as four. The first is: internal, external, internal and external, emptiness, great, ultimate, conditioned, unconditioned, beyond extremes, without beginning or end, unabandonable, self-nature, all dharmas, self-characteristic, non-apprehensible, emptiness of the nature of non-things, extensively explained with the sixteen. The first is: Because that is its nature, therefore the eye is empty of the eye. Likewise, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind should be spoken of. Because it is not constantly abiding, and because it is not of a destructive nature, the eye.
