Consciousness is also not existent, because the bodiless do not abide in the realm. The combination of these elaborations should be sought in the Madhyamaka treatises. Thus, it is extensively explained. Therefore, we do not accept the refuter and the refuted as being established by their own nature, so there is no contradiction in our own words. Without examining the mere imputation of the refuter and the refuted, how can one refute through the door of whether the refuter and the refuted are combined or not? Those who presume to answer the Madhyamaka in this way cannot find fault with the Madhyamaka. Aryadeva said: "To whom there is no side of existent, nonexistent, or both, even after a long time, one cannot speak of faults." Also, the scripture says: "If one questions with emptiness, whoever speaks in response, that person has not answered all questions, and it becomes a fallacy of prasanga." The first verse shows that the Madhyamaka has no faults. The second verse shows that one cannot answer them, and it can dispel all the wrong conceptions of others. However, the Madhyamaka is free from sides and sectarian commitments, which has already been extensively explained. The object to be refuted is what should be refuted, which is the refuter. The function of the refuter is the remover. If one examines the combination or non-combination of the refuter and the refuted, although there is no own-nature, the function of the refuter is reasonable without examination. This is like when a cause produces an effect, if one examines the combination or non-combination, although there is no own-nature, the producing cause is also reasonable without examination. Thus, it is distinguished. If the Vaibhashikas want to overcome this with dissimilar rebuttals, then the great teacher Lekdenjé says: In this Madhyamaka treatise, examining the combination or non-combination of the producing cause and effect and negating own-nature is the appropriate time. However, the clarifying cause, the refuter, is only the reversal of wrong conceptions, and it is not like a real cause producing an effect, so the examination of combination or non-combination should not be the same. Therefore, the Vaibhashika's accusation, saying that the examination of combination or non-combination is the same for the clarifying cause, but the examination of the producing cause is done with that similarity, so we, Lekdenjé, have no occasion for similar accusations. Those who speak thus are the Vaibhashikas.
