After taking a step, those with eyes should be careful. Here in the land of snows, even nominally, there is no self. To assert that persons, sentient beings, individuals, etc., are substantially existent, and that even if the self is not established as substantially existent, it is not contradicted by valid cognition as a basis for karma and its results, and to believe that it is established by nominal valid cognition, and that there is a permanent self that is different from the aggregates, and to believe that persons and sentient beings, etc., do not exist, contradicts all philosophical schools from the Vaibhashika to the Madhyamika, and is to abide in the tenets of those who have become external to the Buddha's teachings. If the self does not exist even nominally, then it cannot be designated based on it, and it contradicts both scripture and the world. If even the Vaibhashika does not accept the substantial existence of a person, then what need is there to mention the higher philosophical schools? The commentary on the Abhidharmakosha says, "However, if it is said to exist as an imputation, then we also say the same." And it says, "Therefore, a person exists as an imputation, like the aggregates and the continuum, etc." And it says, "Therefore, some grasp at a person, and some grasp at the non-existence of everything, which is a flaw in this teaching." So it is said. The nominally established self, which is established by the valid cognition of terms from one's own perspective (303b), is found as the basis of karma and its results, and if it is established as not being harmed by valid cognition, then such a self becomes worthy of examination, because it is not the object of harm by valid cognition, and it is established when examined by nominal valid cognition. If it is accepted that there is a self that is the basis of karma and its results that is worthy of examination, then it is also not reasonable to refute the self of a person at the time of examination, and the self of the co-emergent object that exists without examination should not be established by nominal valid cognition, because the valid cognition of terms is the mind that grasps the worldly, accurate, conventional truth, because what is measured and grasped by that mind appears to be true, and although worldly people who are attached to it say it is valid cognition, it is not valid cognition, because it is a mistaken consciousness. It is established, because in this Prasangika system, all consciousnesses that grasp at the conventional are considered to arise from being defiled by the power of ignorance. In particular, the Jonangpas believe that the self of ultimate truth is permanent, and the self that is designated as conventional truth is completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn.
