Because it does not exist as an existent, it is not a thing. Nor is it dependent on arising in a previous past life. As it is said in the treatise: "To say that it occurred in the past is not reasonable. Whatever occurred in previous lives, this is not that itself. If you think that itself is the self, then the taker will become different. Apart from the taker, what is your self?" Thus it is said. Nor is it not dependent on arising from what has not previously arisen. As it is said in the treatise: "It does not arise from what has not arisen, there will be faults in this. The self becomes made, or arising becomes without cause." Thus it is said. This self is also not birth and destruction. The taker is not the self, it is birth and destruction. How is the taker, becoming the taker? Thus it is said. In this, the four, such as permanence and impermanence, also do not exist. Where are permanence and impermanence, etc., in peace? Where are end and endless, etc., in peace? Whoever holds that the Thus-Gone One exists, held by dense clinging, they conceptualize as non-existent in peaceful nirvana. In emptiness by nature, after the Buddha's nirvana, thinking of it as existent or non-existent is not reasonable. Thus it is said. The self and the aggregates are neither the same nor different. If the aggregates are the self, then they will have birth and destruction. If different from the aggregates, then they will not have the nature of aggregates. Thus it is said. The characteristics of stability and instability, etc., indicated by words, if they exist in the thing that is the basis of the characteristic, then they will arise, if they do not exist, they will not arise, therefore the self is not a thing. As it is said in the sutra: "The four inexhaustible dharmas, taught by the protector of the world, sentient beings, space, bodhicitta, likewise the Buddha and all dharmas. If those were real, then those would be completely exhausted. Because there is none, those are inexhaustible, therefore it is said that those are inexhaustible." Thus it is said. (༣༠༦ན) The third part, about me and mine, is established without examination, merely by the power of ignorance. And the way to liberate by realizing that both do not exist, there are two. The first is: Because beings constantly arise with the thought of self-grasping, and strongly think of what is mine

E! That self from which the thought of grasping at 'I' arises is due to ignorance from unexamined fame. Though it cannot be found when sought in seven ways, what is that self that, due to the power of ignorance of selflessness, revolves in samsara with a view of destruction? Outsiders cling to something other than the aggregates, while our own school clings to the aggregates themselves, or clings to something inexpressible as being the same as them or different from them. The Blessed One taught that those who know say that it is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates, and has no inherent existence; only that much is given the name 'self'. Because such a self is the object of clinging of the thought of grasping at 'I' that constantly arises strongly in beings such as humans and animals who possess ignorance. And whatever is the basis for that self to control or establish, whether it is internal such as the eye, or external such as the objects of enjoyment, forms, etc., that self from which the thought of grasping at 'I' arises is due to ignorance from unexamined fame, and is not established by its own nature. Secondly, why is it that when there is no agent, there is no action? Therefore, 'mine' does not exist in selflessness. Therefore, the yogi will be liberated from seeing the emptiness of self and what belongs to self. Even though there is no self, names are given there, so the yogi does not perceive, and the aggregates of grasping, such as the eye, do not arise. Since the yogi does not perceive any object, he will be liberated from samsara. As it is said in the scriptures: 'When thoughts of self and what belongs to self cease in internal and external phenomena, grasping ceases, and when that ceases, birth ceases.' And as it says in the Ratnavali: 'The aggregates arise from grasping at 'I', grasping at 'I' is actually false, how can the birth of that whose seed is false be true? Having seen that the aggregates are not true in this way, one will abandon grasping at 'I'. Having abandoned grasping at 'I', the aggregates will not arise later.' It is like that. If there is no self, then is there also no 'mine'? Because just as there is no pot without a potter, there is no action without an agent. Because the object to which the agent's action is directed is called action. Therefore, 'mine' does not exist, because the agent's self does not exist. Therefore, observe the aggregates, self, and what belongs to self as empty, and do not cling to samsara.
