To say that one is skilled in debate is to merely refute the conventionally known self as an unexamined term. In terms of ultimate truth, they establish through examination that such a dharma is completely nonexistent. Thus, they apply limitless slanders to both truths and fearlessly and leisurely wander into the great abyss of the extremes of permanence and annihilation. This has never been heard of in this Dharma tradition before. The Zilong Shakya school believes that the non-dual wisdom is the self, and at the place of the Buddha (page 304a), they believe it is the self of pure wisdom. This seems to be because the Mind-Only school considers the other-powered nature as the self, and they seem to speak in accordance with that system. However, even when the Mind-Only school establishes the basis of imputation for a person as the other-powered nature, they do not say that the person imputed in that way is the other-powered nature. This is merely a mistaken statement that does not understand their intention. Some proponents of this system, without hesitation, further say: "Looking at what is self as self, the apprehension of knowledge in terms of meaning is not mistaken, so it does not become something to be abandoned, such as obscurations. Looking at what is not self as self, the apprehension of meaning and knowledge do not agree, so it becomes something to be abandoned, such as obscurations. Therefore, although the five aggregates of the conventionally grasped and apprehended, which are the completely imputed, are not self, grasping them as self is the root of samsara. However, since the ultimate non-dual wisdom is self, looking at it as self is the supreme cause for attaining liberation. And even when liberation is attained, it is accomplished in the state of that self. As it is said: 'When emptiness is completely pure, one obtains the supreme self of no-self. Because one obtains the pure self of the Buddha, one becomes the self of the great self.' And: 'Self and no-self, the cessation of elaboration, the supreme is the true self.'" So they say. To speak in this way is to speak contrary to the words of the Sugata. The meaning of those scriptures is that the Buddha manifested the nature of selflessness and emptiness, and they connect it by saying that the self is manifested (page 304b). And when noble ones understand the freedom from elaboration, they establish the name of self for the freedom from elaboration and speak in that way. However, it seems that they have not understood the meaning at all. If there were an ultimately true self, one would either never be liberated from samsara or be liberated effortlessly. Because there is an ultimately true self, it would necessarily produce

Some are for samsara, some are for nirvana, etc., and they will do various things to bind and liberate according to their desires. Because you also believe that the self that truly exists has the power of freedom that is consistent with the meaning and different from the conventional self. If there is a truly existing self, then it contradicts the seal of the Buddha's teachings that all dharmas encompassing the two truths are without self. If the non-dual wisdom that truly exists is the self, then even if someone sees it as the self again, it will not become a cause of liberation. Because those with a conventional view of self do not see it that way, and those with a true view of self, even if they do not see it that way, have already achieved the truly existing self. Because those with a conventional view of self do not exist even in your nominal terms, so even if they see it that way, they will not attain liberation even in nominal terms. Moreover, you believe that this non-dual wisdom itself is also the ground and path of learning and non-learning, so it must be said that the path and the person are of the same basis. If so, it must be admitted that the one to be traveled is the traveler himself. If the non-dual (305a) wisdom that truly exists is the nature of the Buddha from the beginning, then to say again that the Buddha newly obtains the nature of the Buddha, there is no one more foolish in the world than the one who says this himself, this is the mark of a great curse that has been abandoned like the sun and the moon. In short, when explaining this doctrine, in the face of unexamined errors, just as there are people, sentient beings, etc., so too does the self exist. If examined, just as the self does not exist, neither do people, etc. Moreover, just as there are pots, cloths, forests, etc. in nominal terms, so too does the self exist. If examined, just as the self does not exist, know that all dharmas are free from all elaborations such as existence and non-existence. The second is: Because it is not real, this is not dependent; because it is not non-dependent, this is not arising and ceasing. For this, permanence, etc. also do not exist, it is not that, nor is it other. Because it is established by reliance, so for the dharma of reliance, the basis of discriminations such as reliance and non-reliance is not easily removed by discriminations such as permanence and impermanence. Therefore, this self, which is established by reliance, is not self-nature.
