Upon examination, even I am not established as truly existent according to the view of the great master Chandrakirti, who is free from extremes. Thus it is said. Although there is no contradiction with terms like "purity" for this essence, establishing it as "that is me" and "existing therein" upon examination is a corruption of the great essential points of the sacred Dharma that leads to liberation and omniscience. That pure Tathāgatagarbha is a self-referential entity, and it is also desired that it be the agent of samsara and nirvana, the person, because it is established as truly existent after examination. Because it is overly susceptible to examination, it is said to be extremely base because it pretends to refute the self of persons and phenomena with a facade of words, and then establishes it according to one's own desires. Saying, "If examined very closely, the self is not established as truly existent, according to the Madhyamaka school of Chandrakirti's view," is like giving the nectar of life after the vital point has already been severed with a weapon. Who would trust that? When we establish the co-emergent Tathāgatagarbha without examining it as a person, we also believe that in both truths, that essence is not established as a person or a self. You, however, say that this essence is established as a self in conventional truth, and therefore you will become those who hold to a self. When the noble beings of the Vajrayana enter into the unexamined conventional truth of the world (302a), the application of the terms "person" and "self" to the essence is also not done by those who have not understood the uncommon conventional truth of the world of cause, path, and result, which is the knowable object of the Vajrayana. Therefore, the imputation of the word "self" to the essence is not the domain of ordinary people who have not transformed their minds with tenets, or of non-Buddhists, or of those who speak of the conventional truth of the world who abide in the world from the Paramita vehicle of inner Buddhism onwards. At that time, even though two views arise in the same object of clinging to the view of self, one clinging to the self based on the aggregates and the other clinging to the self based on the Tathāgatagarbha, the continuum of the one who clings does not become two people. Just as when one clings to the self based on all five aggregates in the object of the view of the perishable collection, that does not become five people in the continuum, it is necessary to understand it in that way. In this explanation of the Prasangika texts, it is imputed based on the aggregates, elements, and sense bases.

The meaning of what is said is that in terms of convention, it is not reasonable to have anything other than the object of self-grasping. This is because the conventional truth is established without being examined. The self-grasping of worldly people is aimed at the aggregates. Furthermore, it is said that it is established based on the nature of phenomena because all phenomena such as persons are the pacification of all elaborations and characteristics. It is because of the difference between not realizing and realizing in this way that they are established as Buddhas and sentient beings. The necessity is: even though a person is not a real entity, it is easy to establish a name; in order to be in harmony with the world; in order not to be afraid; in order to speak of oneself and others having merits and faults. This is what the teacher Son of the Victorious Ones said. In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "From the difference of the state of practice that is completely purified of all defilements, the difference of entering and continuity is also indicated by the person." It is said. To place the pride of self on the essence and to indicate it with its sound is that if it is not examined, the essence becomes the great secret Vajrayana practitioner used for liberation, and in the base, path, and result, in order to act for that purpose without interruption, therefore the sound of self is attached to it. It harms reality. Those bases of imputation are not the nature of the self as it is established in the two truths. Therefore, if analyzed with reason, a person cannot be established. In particular, if the essence itself is the self, as it is said: "Having the sound of the lion of no-self." And "The true no-self is suchness." And "The completely pure Dharma of no-self." And so on, it should be known from the vast tantric texts that there is no mention of the existence of a self. If someone claims that there are two selves, the existing self and the non-existing self, who become Buddhas, then there are many who are respected in India, and also the Sthavira school, and in Tibet, the Jonangpas, and the Ritang Gelugpas, and the Butonpas, although they say this, it is not the intention of the Sugata. Therefore, to speak of the Buddha's teachings in this way is a teaching with errors. In the past, the great teacher Vasubandhu had already said in the ninth chapter of the Treasury of Knowledge, and the great teacher Chandrakirti had extensively refuted it in this Commentary on the Root Text of the Entrance to the Middle Way, so those who desire liberation should think carefully and not fall into the great cliff without eyes.
