Without relying on anything else, from beginningless time, due to complete familiarity with clinging to self and what belongs to self, focusing on the aggregates, and thinking, "I am, this is mine," even birds and animals do this, which is called innate view of self. (273a) Its object is the self that is the object of the innate view of self, which is not established by tenets. The object of the imputed view of self also has three types: those of other religions who impute that there is a permanent, single, independent entity, etc., other than the aggregates; some of the Many Honored Ones who impute the aggregates or consciousness as the self; and the Sthavira-vadin who view the aggregates as neither the same nor different from the self; the great Tsongkhapa considers the self imputed on the aggregates that are not mixed with the self to be refuted by signs, to be the self established by conventional valid cognition. Clinging to these is called imputed view of self, which does not arise spontaneously from the habituation of beginningless imprints alone, but is newly fabricated by conceptual thought due to causes such as bad friends and listening, thinking, and meditating on inverted tenets. The object of those ways of clinging is the self that is the object of the imputed view of self. The self of phenomena: For phenomena from form to omniscience, which are included in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are not persons, worldly people and tenet proponents each impute their own nature, distinctions, permanence, impermanence, etc. If divided, there are two types: imputed and innate. The reasoning that refutes these, as explained in the scriptures, is the reasoning that refutes the self of outsiders, the Many Honored Ones, and the Sthavira-vadins. The reasoning that refutes the self of phenomena is as previously stated. Thus, (273b) The self that has become the object of the innate view of self exists only nominally if not examined, because it is seen that all sentient beings manifestly cling to "I am" and "mine." The object of imputation is only imputed by those who manifestly cling to wrong views and have their imprints, because such terms of tenets are not known to worldly people, so all

Moreover, it is neither existent in terms of conventional designation, nor is it existent in conventional truth. However, since worldly people do not grasp a self other than the aggregates, it is true that the self posited by outsiders does not exist even in designation. But the basis of designation of the self of those who are revered by many does exist in designation, because sentient beings grasp the aggregates as the self. Then, the self of the Sthavira school also exists in designation, because worldly people do not analyze the self in relation to the aggregates as being the same or different, permanent or impermanent, and so on. If you think that, it is not so. Because they, after analyzing with reason, acknowledge the aggregates as the basis of the clinging to self, and acknowledge that the self and the aggregates are inexpressible as being the same or different. Therefore, if analyzed, it is impossible for it to exist even in designation, and it is not known in the world in that way. Worldly people do not acknowledge it in that way after analyzing with reason, therefore, if not analyzed, there is no contradiction in the aggregates being the basis of the clinging to self. It is merely that they have not engaged in analyzing whether it is the same or different, etc., but it is not that they (p. 274) consider it to be true for the reason that it is inexpressible. When analyzed with reason, or in the face of the noble one's equipoise, all selves that are objects of coemergent and imputed clinging to self do not exist, because all the reasonings that will be explained will harm them. Thus, the self that is the object of coemergent clinging to self is like a Jeta who is designated in dependence on the aggregates. For example, like a pot that is designated on an assemblage. This does not deny that it exists conventionally when the designation is not analyzed, but if analyzed, it denies that it exists inherently in both truths. Because the view of self that takes it as its object is the cause of all afflictions and faults arising in dependence on the coemergent, and because the noble one's equipoise does not see it even in designation. The imputed self is denied in both truths, because it does not accord with any of the designations of the noble ones and worldly people, and because the view of self that takes it as its object also causes the coemergent view of self to increase, become vast, and become firmly established. If one is particularly attached to it, then one will not necessarily attain liberation through the middle way, having abandoned the two extremes of the path of liberation and omniscience. However, the root of samsara is the coemergent self.
