Because the darkness of ignorance obscures the eye of wisdom, it is impossible to do so. Therefore, although it is the same as unborn, for those with darkness, hair and the like appear, just as the child of a barren woman does not appear. In terms of convention, too (257b) Although it is the same as non-existent, in the realm of a child's mind, form and the like change, while the child of a barren woman and the like do not change. It should be known that there is no contradiction. Just as those without darkness do not see hair, when the noble ones see that thing, they do not see any of the conventional dharmas, so they see form and the like. Why would the examination of why they do not see the child of a barren woman even begin? Secondly, there are two types: those that cannot be determined by reason and scripture. The first is: If dreams, cities of gandharvas, etc., water of mirages, and illusions, images, etc., are seen as unborn, even if they are the same as non-existent, why do you change in that way? That is not reasonable. Let's put aside arguing and examining those with darkness for now. For the time being, it is necessary to argue and examine you yourself greatly. If even you can see dreams and cities of gandharvas with walls, as well as water of mirages and illusions, images, etc., as well as rock crevices and snakes, even though they are inherently unborn, even though they are the same as the child of a barren woman in terms of meaning and non-existence, why can you see dreams and the like, but not the child of a barren woman? After arguing and examining yourself in this way, you will later argue and examine us as well. Therefore, if form and the like do not exist in their own nature, it is the same as the child of a barren woman in terms of existence and non-existence. It is unreasonable to say that. The second is: Although this is unborn in the ultimate sense, why is it not a realm seen by the world like the child of a barren woman? Therefore, this statement is uncertain. You say: If phenomena do not exist in the ultimate sense, then in convention they are also like the child of a barren woman. It is uncertain to say this, because form and the like, in the ultimate sense, are like dreams and the like. Although they are unborn, why are they not a realm seen by the world like the child of a barren woman? (258a) Therefore. The meaning of the words is that in the world, the eight similes of illusion and the child of a barren woman are the same in terms of non-existence of their own nature, but the eight similes of illusion such as dreams appear.
