Because it exists in the world. Second, there are two types: simile and meaning. The first is: Just as the power of cataracts causes some to perceive hairs, double moons, peacock feathers, bees, etc., as inverted. The power of the obscuration of ignorance depends on not seeing it. How can one see it inverted? Through the power of ignorance, it appears as such to what is not it. This is shown through the door of simile: Just as the power of cataracts causes some with cataracts to perceive hairs, double moons, peacock feathers, bees, etc., which do not exist, although they are of unborn nature, they are perceived as real things. The second is: Likewise, due to the power of the fault of ignorance, the unwise, with various wisdoms, come to know conditioned things. For example, likewise, beings also do not see their own nature due to the power of the fault of ignorance. The unwise accumulate merit, non-merit, and immovable karma, and with wisdom, they come to know the various manifestations of the conditioned world of samsara. The sutra says: "This is because of ignorance that there are actions." It also says: "A person associated with ignorance also accumulates the manifestation of merit, the manifestation of non-merit, and the manifestation of immovability." It also says: "When ignorance ceases, actions cease," as the Blessed One said. The second is: If karma arises dependent on ignorance, and without ignorance, it does not arise, only the unwise can definitely understand this. The sun of wisdom that dispels the thick darkness, the wise understand emptiness and are liberated. If, according to this principle of arising and ceasing, karma arises without self-nature dependent on ignorance without self-nature. If there is no essence of ignorance, then the essence of action does not arise, only foolish and unwise people can definitely understand this. Because they do not understand that both are unborn from the beginning, and because of ignorance, they cling to the arising of karma, and that without it, it does not arise. Therefore, the sun of wisdom that sees that very truth dispels the thick darkness of ignorance.

Those wise ones will be liberated from samsara, because they understand that actions arising from ignorance, like the illusion of dependent origination, are empty of inherent existence, thereby abandoning ignorance and no longer clinging to actions. Second part, debate. Divided into response and refutation. The first part is: If things do not exist in the ultimate sense, then in the conventional sense they are like the child of a barren woman. Therefore, they will become non-existent. Therefore, they are actually self-existent. Forms, etc., are actually self-existent in the ultimate sense. If forms and other things do not exist in the ultimate sense, then in the conventional sense, just like the child of a barren woman, these conventional phenomena will also become non-existent in the conventional sense. But this is not the case (257a), because they exist in the conventional sense, so it is said. Second part, showing that the analogy is uncertain. Madhyamikas will not be subject to this accusation. Three points that one's own school should not refute. The first point, uncertain for those with cataracts, and uncertain for yourself. The first point is: Those that become the objects of vision for those with cataracts, etc., such as hairs, etc., because they are unborn. For the time being, one should debate those things themselves, because later ignorance is connected with cataracts. The answer to this is: Those that become the objects of consciousness for those with cataracts, etc., such as hairs, etc., are the same as the unborn child of a barren woman. You with cataracts can see non-existent hairs, why can't you see the child of a barren woman? For the time being, one should debate those with cataracts, because later seeing unborn things, but not seeing the child of a barren woman, is because the cataracts of ignorance obscure the eye of wisdom. We should not debate and investigate, because we yogis see things in this way, and those who want to attain the wisdom of yogis should also particularly believe in the teachings that proclaim the nature of phenomena in this way. Therefore, we rely on the scriptures to explain that things are without inherent existence, rather than forcibly proving that forms, etc., exist and the child of a barren woman does not exist by relying on the consciousness of ordinary people themselves.
