O you who possess the Dharma! Know that everything arises from causes. Because the extremely bright world is also held by the beings of each world. Just as the opponent's own mind arises from its object. If the example is not established, then it is established. Because when you generate a mind with a blue appearance, it arises from blue. Because you see that without blue, the mind does not arise. Secondly, if one is ignorant of this, it is contradictory to understand the other shore. It shows two views of wrongly seeing the absence of the other shore (p. 253v). The first is: By what nature do those arising things become the object of your mind? If it is not that nature, how can one who has thick darkness of ignorance in his mind correctly understand the other world? The one who claims that phenomena arise from the four elements says: How can one deny that mind and mental factors arise from the cause of the four elements, when it is clearly seen? Because it is seen with one's own eyes, and if one denies it, one will fall into the fault of self-contradiction. In this matter of cause and effect, what kind of visibility exists? The cause of these things is the four elements. From the particular maturation of the four elements, just as one sees the color and shape of lotuses, cotton, apples, peacocks, and crows, so too, the mind, as something that completely distinguishes objects, also arises from the four elements. For example, just as the special maturation of a mixture of alcohol and medicine produces the ability to intoxicate living beings, so too, the special maturation of the wriggling of semen and blood produces the mind, and the mind is able to completely distinguish things. Therefore, this world arises only from the cause of the four elements. It is impossible for the results of good and non-good actions to arise in this life and the next. Beautiful woman, enjoy and eat well! You will not have the excellent body that has passed away. This body is just an aggregate, and once it is destroyed or gone, it will not return. Her daughter thus made her realize that there is no afterlife, and said this in order to lead her to that path. One can ask this: How do you know that the absence of an afterlife is reasonable? The answer is: There is no past or future life, and if there were, it should be directly visible, but in reality it is not directly visible. Since it is not directly visible, what is directly visible? And how is it known that it is not directly visible?

If asked, what is direct perception? The other world (253b) which does not exist as an object, is the subject. It follows that it is direct perception. Because the other world is not manifest, it is direct perception. If you admit it, then what does not exist should also become an object for you. Because it is direct perception. Just like something that exists. If you admit it, then what exists should also become non-existent. Because there is nothing called non-existent, and if there is no connection, the connection will not be established. If you admit it, then the elements that exist, such as earth, and the other world that does not exist, are unreasonable. Because non-existent things and non-existent things are non-existent. If you say that what is not direct perception is known from the sign of what is not direct perception, then how can it not be inferred that the other world does not exist through an unapprehended way? Because the other world is not direct perception, and if it itself is not direct perception, then nothing can grasp that the other world does not exist. It is not established, if you say that it is grasped by inference, then your inference of the other world from the signs of happiness and suffering in this life is unreasonable, like the history before the wolf's footprints, so inference is impossible, and it is said that the object of sensory direct perception is limited to that extent, which is also unreasonable. Because inference can establish that the other world does not exist. Therefore, for those who slander the other world, etc., refutation should be stated through this method of refutation. For example, for an eye blinded by cataracts, when two non-existent moons appear in the sky, just like the appearance of things other than that, such as hair, flies, etc. (254a) are also non-existent, the elements such as earth are the cause of all external and internal things, then who can make the object of your Lokayata's mind become earth, etc.? If earth, etc., are not the cause of knowledge, then the outsider will think that stones, etc., have consciousness, and will think that breathing, etc., which accompany them, will occur. What does the Lokayata rely on to be the cause of knowledge? Due to the great power of the darkness of the mind, how can someone who says that such a world exists in this very direct perception know that the other world is extremely subtle and becomes the object of the divine eye?
