You and the absence of characteristics, the absence of wishes, the absence of manifestation, the unborn, the unarisen, the absence of things, the absence of sentient beings, the absence of life, the absence of persons, the absence of self, and the doors of liberation that are spoken of, these are the definitive meaning. Thus it is said. Its meaning is that the meaning of the sutras that are directly taught is harmed by reason, that is the provisional meaning. In order for the disciples to initially enter the path and to ripen their minds, through various words and letters, in accordance with the wishes of each individual's mind, the conventional truth is mostly taught. Although the direct words that are taught in this way are harmed by reason, they are taught in order to gradually guide the disciples. The meaning of the sutras that are directly taught is not harmed by reason, that is the definitive meaning. In order for the disciples to enter the result and to liberate their minds, through the means of being profound, difficult to observe, and primordially empty, in accordance with the wisdom of the noble ones, the ultimate truth is taught, which is not harmed by reason by the clinging to reality, and at the moment of teaching, the meaning is understood and liberation (247b) is attained. Then, in the "Explication of the Thought of the Noble One," it is said that the sutras that teach that all phenomena are without essence are of provisional meaning, and the sutras that teach that the completely imputed does not exist, but that the other-powered and the thoroughly established exist, are of definitive meaning, so how is that? To this, the Mind-Only school says, that is just as it is in the literal meaning, in the intermediate wheel of the "Mother Sutra" and others, teaching that all phenomena are without essence is of provisional meaning, and in this sutra and others, in the final wheel, teaching that the three characteristics exist and do not exist separately is of definitive meaning. They say this. That is just speaking without having understood the intention of the Blessed One, because the direct teaching that all phenomena are empty of essence and so on has become the definitive meaning, because there is no harm to it, and it prevents and will prevent the four extremes of birth and so on that are hoped to be harmful, and if all phenomena were not empty from the beginning, then it would contradict all the terms of past and future, and the latter two characteristics are harmed by reason in their real existence, because the other-powered real existence has already been prevented, and if it does not exist, then the suchness that abandons the subject of phenomena cannot exist either. We Madhyamikas say this: The "Explication of the Thought"

Moreover, (these scriptures) also only explain according to the view of the Madhyamaka school. The compassionate (Buddha) did not explain according to the view of the Vijnanavada school, because all the discussions in these scriptures about the differences between the existence and non-existence of the three natures are all literal and direct meanings. Because its meaning is not like the literal meaning, but shows that all three natures are without self-nature in a definitive sense, it is not explained according to the view of the Vijnanavada school, so it cannot be established as a scripture that expounds only consciousness. Seeing this meaning of freedom, the Lord of the Three Realms, Drigungpa, said, "The scripture that expounds only consciousness actually more clearly clarifies the Madhyamaka." He roared like a lion. Therefore, all those who are realists (Sarvastivadins), etc., whose views are judged to be contrary to the two truths, do not conform to the intention of the Buddha's scriptures. If they do conform, then all the scriptures will be self-contradictory and will be refuted by reason, thus violating the vow of fearless proclamation; contradicting the fact that all scriptures have different words but the same meaning; and it will lead to the teacher not being omniscient, but teaching others without having determined the final conclusion himself. Because they do not understand this point, some Zilongpas and others now say that the self-schools of all four schools have become correct Madhyamaka, because (they) have eliminated the extremes of permanence and annihilation in their own schools, and have proclaimed the Dharma characteristics that the teacher has taught as establishing Madhyamaka. This is not established, because when the lower three schools of philosophy lead the meaning of the Buddha's scriptures to their own school and to others, they only prevent the meaning of the scriptures from being explained in that way, and in fact they only regard the Buddha's words as a verbal promise. The teacher did not separately establish four kinds of Madhyamaka established by reason that are free from permanence and annihilation for each person. If they are established, then the knowable will have four different ways of existing that are in accordance with the two truths and the four schools. If that is the case, then the lower schools will not be harmed by the reason of the upper schools, so it will not be possible to find a place to establish the worldly conventions without examining the good and bad schools and whether there is a path to liberation, etc. Therefore, the tenets established by the realists are only the views of those people.
