Like the sutras say, the form of the true self indicated by the sound of wanting (to have) myself, in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra and others, it is said to be without self-nature, is other-powered, and is perfectly established. It is also said: "The grasping consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river, it is not permissible to grasp as self, I have not taught this to children." There are many like this. Furthermore, just as a doctor gives medicine to a patient, the Buddha also, in the same way, emphatically proclaimed mind-only to sentient beings. These quotes and others clearly show that it is provisional meaning. The Buddha's teaching of mind-only was also spoken in consideration of the differences in the thoughts of the trainees. Just as a doctor uses poison as medicine according to different conditions. Therefore, for those who cling to reality, if from the beginning all things are denied as inherently existent (244b), they will be afraid and not enter the Dharma, so in order to get them to enter, it is taught as if things have inherent existence. As it is said: "For whom, what pleases them, first tell them that. A vessel that will damage the true Dharma, is certainly not." Therefore, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Mahāmati, through questions and answers to the Blessed One, said that the Tathāgatagarbha is permanent, self, truly established, the agent, without qualities, pervasive, and indestructible, because there is a need for this, so it is said to be provisional meaning, to this, the self-commentary has a detailed quote from "The Blessed One" to "should follow non-self", please look there. The meaning is this: the Tathāgatagarbha is permanent, substance, truth, emptiness, this is based on intention, necessity, and harm to reality. The necessity is: in order to gradually guide the trainees who cling to reality, as has already been said. Especially the faculties of the trainees. As it is said: "For the five faults of cowardice, despising inferior beings, slandering the true Dharma, clinging to self, and excessive attachment, in order to abandon these, these were proclaimed." Like this, for those who have these faults, it is necessary to teach in that way. The intention is: in the holy land of India, it seems that two different views of Madhyamaka and Yogācāra have arisen. The Yogācārins are...

Some consider it to be the alaya-vijnana, thinking of the meaning of the Dense Array and the Lankavatara Sutra. Some consider it to be the seed of manifestation on the alaya. Some consider it to be the perfected entity that is empty of other-powered and completely conceptualized things. Some also consider it to be the ninth consciousness, called the stainless mind. Those who speak of no-self-nature are: In the face of investigation or noble ones, in the manner of pacifying existence and non-existence, the tathagatagarbha of the Buddhas and individual sentient beings is naturally pure and becomes equality, but without investigation, in the face of the world, when making distinctions between samsara and nirvana, it is said with the intention that sentient beings have the lineage to accomplish Buddhahood and that the complete Buddha body emanates from that lineage in accordance with the beings to be tamed. As it is said: Because the complete Buddha body emanates, And because the tathagatagarbha is inseparable, And because there is lineage, all embodied beings Always have the essence of the Buddha. Therefore, the harm to reality is: If the essence of the Tathagata, which is contained in the briefly stated words, is like that, then it cannot be established even in mere conventional terms, let alone in ultimate terms, because the Blessed One himself has forbidden it. And it is repeatedly stated in the Nirvana Sutra and others that all sentient beings do not have the qualities of marks and examples. And in the impure state, there is no permanence, self, happiness, or purity, as is repeatedly stated in the Garland of Jewels, the Nirvana Sutra, and the Root Commentary on the Uttaratantra. If the essence of the Sugata is considered to be the self and the uncreated entity, then all refutations of the self of the outsiders will become meaningless. The commentary says: Just as the essence is taught as provisional, so is mind-only taught as provisional. Some also think that the Blessed One spoke of the mind itself as the essence of the Sugata, because the Lankavatara Sutra says: Great Wisdom, good and non-good are like this, namely, the eight consciousnesses. What are the eight? They are the proclaimed alaya-vijnana of the Tathagata, and so on. Because the essence itself is taught as provisional, the alaya-vijnana is also taught as provisional. Similarly, those who cut off the lineage
