I, all the determinations about lineage, the final determination into three vehicles, and all the teachings on other-emptiness and self-awareness, are shown by the teachings of the Lankavatara Sutra to be provisional meanings. The second is: If there is no object of knowledge, then the knowledge is eliminated, the Buddhas said it is easily attained. If there is no object of knowledge, then the knowledge is blocked and accomplished, so at first, the object of knowledge is negated. If there is no object of knowledge, then the knowledge of the object is eliminated, the Buddhas said it is easily attained, because the object and the object-possessor are established in dependence on each other. Just as the teacher first engages in the accumulation of merit such as generosity, and then enters into the accumulation of wisdom, so at first, the existence or non-existence of external appearances, etc., negates the object of knowledge, because if one realizes the selflessness of the object of knowledge, then later the blocking of knowledge will be accomplished, so for that very reason. Also, if there is no object of knowledge, then there is no knowledge, sometimes it is realized by oneself alone, and sometimes it is realized by a slight indication. The third is: (246a) Thus, having known the history of the scriptures, know which sutra is not that, but has a different meaning. Also, having understood that the provisional meaning is spoken, one should guide, and know that the meaning of emptiness is the definitive meaning. Wise ones, having analyzed the subject matter of the provisional and definitive meanings just spoken, know the history of the scriptures, that is, know which one speaks of the provisional and definitive meanings in what way. Which sutra does not directly clarify the suchness that is free from the eight extremes of dependent arising, etc., but speaks of actual arising and ceasing, self-existence, etc., know that this is spoken as a provisional meaning in order to enter into the profound meaning, and then use the scriptures to guide the beings to be tamed to the ultimate meaning, and explain it. For example, the realists would say that the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind are the objects of touch, so they are not visible to the eye, but form is not like that, so it is visible to the eye. To this, the Madhyamikas would say that if that is the case, then the touch that is produced by the elements, which is not perceived by the eye, then the result produced by it, form, will not be established, so it is actually shown that form is not visible to the eye. Therefore, from the words of provisional meaning, the realization of definitive meaning can also be generated by skillful means. As it is said in the Praise of the Transcendent: If the elements are not taken by the eye, their arising

How to hold on to it? When it is said about form like that, you should stop holding on to form. It is said like that. Furthermore, those who speak of entities think that the meaning of impermanence in the sutras is that the former existent, which is the meaning of non-existence due to change, makes the latter existent, which is the meaning of existence. However, the Madhyamikas say that even if impermanence is spoken of as having no meaning, impermanence is not established as truly existent, so the definitive meaning of those who speak of entities (246b) becomes the provisional meaning. Therefore, that scripture should also be understood as entering into the definitive meaning of emptiness or for the sake of the provisional. Any sutra that directly shows emptiness as being free from the eight extremes, such as dependent arising, etc., should be known as truly definitive, because the meaning of that sutra cannot be turned into something else. The distinction between provisional and definitive is as follows, according to the Noble Samadhiraja Sutra: "As the emptiness was taught by the Sugata, know the distinctions of the definitive sutras. Whatever sentient beings, individuals, or persons are taught, know that all those teachings are provisional in meaning." And: "In thousands of world realms, whatever sutras I have spoken, the letters are different but the meaning is the same, and it is not possible to fully declare them. If one contemplates one thing, all of them will become meditation. The many teachings of all the Buddhas, which are greatly revealed in the world, all phenomena are without self. Whoever is skilled in meaning, if they train in this place, it will not be difficult to find the Buddha's teachings." Furthermore, according to the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence: "What is a sutra of provisional meaning? Any sutra that speaks of conventional truth is of provisional meaning. What is a sutra of definitive meaning? Any sutra that is spoken for the sake of manifesting ultimate truth is of definitive meaning. Any sutra that speaks of various words and letters (247a) is of provisional meaning, and any sutra that speaks of what is profound, difficult to see, and difficult to comprehend is of definitive meaning. Any sutra that speaks of various sounds and languages of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, individuals, persons, those born of power, sons of power, agents, and experiencers, as if there were a master where there is no master, is of provisional meaning, and any sutra that speaks of emptiness
